Seve The Movie - Legends are Born to Win

By: Golf Shake | Mon 16 Jun 2014

SEVE The MovieFor golf fans, this Summer sees the release of an eagerly awaited 'rags-to-riches' golf story coming to the big screen in a new cinema movie - SEVE.  The movie combines dramatic recreations with electrifying archive footage to tell his incredible story.

Often described as one of the mostly naturally talented players ever,  Seve learnt to play on the beaches of Spain using only a single club, a broken three iron strapped to a stick but went on to win 5 majors and over 80 tournament titles.

“There are many ways to play golf. You can build your own golf course by using your imagination,” he said.

From humble beginnings, in a sleepy fishing village in northern Spain, and despite being blocked at almost every turn in pursuit of the sport he loved - he went on to become world number 1 and the greatest golfer of a generation.

Seve, naturally talented, tenacious and charismatic he helped to revolutionise and popularise golf around the world.

The young Seve is played by José Luis Gutiérrez Real. Born in Santander, Spain, just 5km from Pedreña, where Seve Ballesteros was born, José never considered becoming an actor until he was offered the opportunity to play young Seve. His hero since childhood, José met Ballesteros when he was younger. Little did he know, four years later he would be playing his idol in a film.

The movie features archive footage of Seve's most spectacular performances alongside authentic dramatised sequences (starring José Luis Gutiérrez as young Seve) and contributions from the likes of Peter Alliss, Nick Faldo, José Maria Olazábal, Gary Player and Tiger Woods.

Seve covers his career including his Open Championship victories in 1979, ‘84 and ‘88, and Masters Tournament wins in ‘80 and ‘83.  The film also celebrates how he reinvigorated European golf. Known as ‘Mr RyderCup’, his partnership with Olazábal was the most successful in the history of the biennial contest with America.

As a player and captain, Seve led the European Ryder Cup team to a record five victories. The emotional climax covers the ‘The Miracle of Medinah’ as he inspired a remarkable final victory, this time from beyond the grave.

Directed by John Paul Davidson (Stephen Fry in America, Brazil with Michael Palin) and edited by Saska Simpson (The Three Kings, Paranormal Witness) with original score by Academy Award winner Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love), SEVE is produced by Stephen Evans (Much Ado About Nothing, BAFTA nominated The Madness of King George and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) with the full support of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

SEVE will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland by Entertainment Film Distributors on 27th June 2014.

The Seve Ballesteros Foundation

The Seve Ballesteros Foundation honours Seve’s life, achievements and professional career. It's mission is to preserve his legacy by supporting his passion, golf, and what it can do for young people.

Seve set up the Foundation in 2009, committing to contribute to the advancement of science for the benefit of those suffering from brain tumours.

It also aims to introduce children to golf and to use the game as a vehicle for social development, instilling the values associated with its founder: humility, effort, perseverance, spirit, determination, integrity, tolerance and respect.

20% of the production’s profits will be paid to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation’s nominated charity, Cancer Relief.
