St Enodoc Rises to 14th Spot in Golf World's Top 100 Golf Courses in England

St Enodoc’s Church Course has risen to 14th spot in Golf World’s latest ranking series of the Top 100 Golf Courses in England, up two from 16th place when the list first came out just over two years ago.

Recognised as one of the most challenging and picturesque layouts in England, St Enodoc is the only course in Cornwall to feature in the top 20 of the ranking by the UK golf magazine.

Designed by James Braid, the Church Course at St Enodoc is famed for its characteristic fairway undulations and firm greens that are set against the dramatic backdrop of the Camel Estuary and north Atlantic Coast giving it some of the greatest panoramas of any course in the world.

The championship links is in good company as it is ranked amongst a host of English golfing gems that feature in this year’s list which has awarded the top three positions to the highly-feted Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale Old and Royal Lytham & St Annes.

“St Enodoc is both proud and excited to be placed so highly in Golf World’s Top 100 Golf Courses in England and to have moved up another two spots given the quality of the courses that are ranked alongside us,” said Tuck Clagett, General Manager of St Enodoc.

“We are continually investing a great deal, both financially and physically, in the club in an effort to improve the conditioning and presentation of the course as well as the facilities that we offer so it is extremely rewarding when our input is recognised from a body outside the club.”

Golf World describes the James Braid-designed course thus: “St Enodoc continues to evolve with further alterations made since the astute changes by Peter McEvoy. The amateur legend wanted merely to tighten the course up, not change it markedly. This he has achieved and it remains one of the most charismatic pieces of golfing property in England.”


St Enodoc was recently positioned at 41st place in Golf Monthly magazine’s latest course ranking for the ‘Top 100 Courses UK and Ireland 2012’ whilst earlier in the year Golf World magazine ranked the Church Course in 35th position in its ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in Britain & Ireland and in 76th spot in the ‘World’s Top 100 You Can Play’.

In 2011, golf website Top 100 Golf Courses voted St Enodoc as the Best-in-County in its Cornwall ranking whilst back in 2009 the course was ranked 55th in the world outside the US by the well-respected US Golf Digest magazine.

Further testament to the quality of the links is the fact that the Church Course has hosted numerous amateur golf events, including the English Ladies Amateur Championship in 1993 and 2002 and the English Counties Championship in 1989 and 2005.
