French Open Preview and Picks

By: | Tue 02 Jul 2013

This preview was bought to you by My Sports Tips - A sports blog offering insight, opinion, betting tips and the best odds on this weeks golfing action.

The European Tour continues its summer tilt around Europe this week as the tour arrives in France. The French Open has always been a big week, but in recent years it has carried a massive prize fund and this week is no different with a total purse of 3 Million Euros! Check out our 2013 French Open picks:

Picks

Bet of the week – Francesco Molinari 28-1 Jiminez

Molinari loves this course! He has finished 2nd twice and has been showing some decent form this year. We think you need not look any further than the gritty Italian.

Have a great chance:

Miguel Angel Jiminez  50-1

Jiminez is a past winner and has been threatening a win over the past few weeks on the EuropeanTour.
Martin Kaymer

Martin Kaymer 14-1

Kaymer has a fantastic record around Le Golf National including a win and a 4th place finish. He has been getting closer to returning to the winners circle and may be in the sort of form to win.

Marcel Siem  40-1

Last year’s winner has been popping up on leader boards all over the world in recent weeks. The German is scared of nobody and loves to get fired up. He will be gunning for a defence of his title.

Go on….have a punt – Alvaro Quiros 80-1

Le Golf National is the sort of course that should suit the super long hitting Spaniard. He managed a T5 last week in Ireland on a similar layout and looks to be returning to the sort of form that saw him become a multiple winner.

Top 20 finish

Victor Dubisson – 5/2

The Course – Le Golf National

The course is a long inland links style layout which does feature some water on certain holes. It measures over 7300 yards.

History

The French Open has been played at Le Golf National for over a decade and scoring is usually tough with windy conditions often prevalent. French winners have been plenty with the most recent being former Ryder Cupper Thomas Levet.

The Ryder Cup will also be played at Le Golf National in 5 years time and the entry list sees a host of current Ryder Cup stars in the field.

Type of player to win

The course should suit long hitters with a strong mental attitude to deal with the windy conditions. It is a similar layout to that of Carton House where last week’s Irish Open was played and will require many of the same attributes.

Notable Past winners

2012 Le Golf National Marcel Siem 276 (−8)
2011 Le Golf National Thomas Levet 277 (−7)
2010 Le Golf National Miguel Ángel Jiménez 273 (−11)PO
2009 Le Golf National Martin Kaymer 271 (−13)PO
2008 Le Golf National Pablo Larrazábal 269 (−15)
2007 Le Golf National Graeme Storm 277 (−7)
2006 Le Golf National John Bickerton 273 (−11)
2005 Le Golf National Jean-François Remésy 273 (−11)PO
