Masters Betting Picks

We are this week assessing the golf betting opportunities in the field for The Masters, taking place at Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia.

The first major of the year is upon us and Woods is a short-priced favourite after a return to winning form in 2013. He is followed in the market by McIlroy, who displayed an encouraging return to form at last week’s Valero Texas Open. But are they really the ones to be watching or are there others in the field that look better equipped?

Augusta is a lengthy 7,435 yard par 72 and ranked as the 8th most difficult course out of 49 on the PGA Tour in 2012. In order to tame this course a player must have length off the tee or else they will be at a huge disadvantage, so rule out any short hitters. But as the ladies say...it’s not just the length that matters, but what you do with it. That is true of Augusta, as there is no point hitting booming drives if you can’t take advantage of them and find the greens. Therefore a good GIR rating is essential as you really don’t want your player to be scrambling around the fringes of these super speedy greens.

Players to watch...

Bubba Watson (40/1) has started the year in solidly consistent form with 5 top 18 finishes from 6 events. Bubba won this event last year with 4 rounds under par so we know that he is extremely capable around Augusta. With a rank of 7th for driving distance and 6th for GIR we think he has the perfect game for this course and see no reason why he can’t repeat his 2012 win.

Robert Garrigus (207/1) recorded 5 top 22 finishes from his first 5 events this year. He has gone a little off the boil in his 3 events since that run but what better stage than Augusta to pick his level back up? On debut last year he was MC, but that experience should help him this week. Garrigus is 4th in the driving distance rankings and 31st for GIR so we think he offers some great each-way value at a massive price.

Nicolas Colsaerts (113/1) has made a sketchy start to life on the PGA Tour this year but recorded a nice T18 at his last event (WGC Cadillac). He has had a few weeks off since then to prepare for his first Masters and therefore should be well rested. Masters rookies rarely win here so only consider Colsaerts as an each-way option. However, he has the game to go well here...1st in driving distance and 11th in GIR.
