Good Win for Michael at Mottram

By: Adam Smith | Mon 19 Sep 2011

Goodwin on the GtourMichael Goodwin joined the long list of first time winners on the Gtour this season with a win at the final event in the regulation 2011 ‘Race to Cyprus’ season at De Vere Mottram Hall.

Goodwin’s 35 points was good enough for a one point victory over a host of players on 34 points.

De Vere Mottram Hall, one of the most demanding courses on the De Vere circuit certainly didn’t disappoint as the course was in its usual immaculate condition.

The sun shone as rain threatened the 55 players who teed it up with some still having a lot to play for as a good finish could have meant they finished inside the top 52 in the Order of Merit and qualified for the two-day Semi-Final at De Vere Belton Woods in November.

Goodwin who had four gross birdies on his front nine made the turn in 36 and scoring 20 points which was a great platform to take into the back-nine.

Four players tied for second place and all four will be in the Semi-Finals. Ian Halliwell came out on top from the countback over Alun Jones, Richard Le Page and Alan Redmond.

John Moore, Tim Hawkins, Marc Tarling, Ian Huxford and Jason Liu make up the top-ten following impressive performaces and all make it to the Semi-Finals.

For Liu it was better late than never as he finished in 52nd place in the Order of Merit to secure his place and a shot at gaining a place in the final at Aphrodite Hills, Cyprus.

"I’m completely shattered mentally and physically", said Liu

He added, "I played as if my life depended on it and I’m so pleased I’ve made it after a long hard season. The work I put in has paid off and I’m hoping it’s onwards and upwards from here."

After the UK Semi-final the Tour will see the top 10 players earn the right to compete in the two-day Grand Final event at Aphrodite Hills Resort, Cyprus happening between 19 - 23 January 2012 and have the chance to become the Gtour’s maiden winner of the ‘The Race to Cyprus’ Order of Merit.

Aegean Airlines, the preferred Airline of the PGA of Europe will fly the 10 finalists along with staff, friends and family for the grand final in Cyprus.

In addition to the flights the 10 finalists will receive complimentary accommodation, two rounds of golf on the championship course at Aphrodite Hills and clothing for the Grand Final from Bunker Mentality, proud sponsor of the Gtour since 2009.
