De Vere Invitational at Dunston Hall

By: Adam Smith | Mon 19 Jul 2010

De Vere Dunston Hall was the latest stop for the Gtour as the course played host to the De Vere Invitational on Saturday 17 July.

Golf Locker TV keeping a close eye on the actionReported bad weather stayed away for the most part leaving the players to battle with the tricky and narrow course.
David Roth (13) claimed his maiden Gtour victory with 35 points thanks to a superb back nine of 19 points which helped on the count back.

Debutant Stephen McCarty (14) came a very narrow second due to Roth’s stunning back-nine on what proved to be a low day for scoring due to the difficult course.

“It’s a very, very tight course and good course management is essential” said Roth: “I played the course the day before and I’m glad I did because it is so important to know where to put your ball. I only used the driver on a few holes because you didn’t need it, but I was really pleased with the way I played especially on the back nine.”

It was very tight at the top with five points separating the top seven and with the event being the mid-way point for the season every player was playing for much needed Order of Merit points something Roth is keeping a close eye on:

“That was my main aim today, I had a look before the event that only four out of the top ten were in action, so if I wanted at least a top three to give myself a chance.”

For the first time on tour this season the golf locker TV cameras were out catching all the action. The Gtour will be featured on Sky for the first time towards the end of the month. Managing Director Jamie O’Neill was happy with how the day went:

“It went really well, I was pleased with what we got on camera and hopefully it will turn out okay, and it’s great for the guys that play on this tour because they may well see themselves playing golf on Sky.”

Tournament Director Colin Astbury was also very pleased with how the day went:

“It was really pleasing to see a lot of new faces here today. We doubled our numbers from last year’s event which is really positive due to the location of this event. Most people struggle to get here but I am happy with the way it turned out and the way the course played. It gave everyone a chance but on the other hand was a really tough test and my congratulations go out to David.”

With the season in full flow now, the tour will be back in action in three weeks in the first of two events taking place in August.

Saturday 7 August the tour bus will pull up at De Vere Wychwood Park before heading south to the De Vere Wokefield Park on Saturday 28 August for the Golf Breaks cup.
