The Best Hollow Construction Irons of 2018

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 27 Feb 2018

As the upcoming golf season approaches, we have taken a look at the new releases that have emerged onto the market, bringing together the Best Hollow Construction Irons of 2018, a line of golf clubs that are drawing attention with their advances in technology.

Golfshake Podcast Discussion on Hollow Construction Irons.

PXG 0311

The PXG 0311 is part of the Players Collection and is the company’s original iron and accommodates the widest range of golfing skill. The body of the iron is forged from S25C soft carbon steel that has a tight grain structure and resonates differently than cast materials, which adds to an outstanding impact experience.

To add, TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) is a low-density, vibration-dampening material that enhances a club’s sound and feel. This also adds structural stability for PXG’s patented ultra thin face and helps to produce more efficient energy transfer. The ultra-thin face is formed from HT1770 high-strength steel and, when coupled with TPE materials, results in higher ball speeds and longer distance.

The weight saved using a thin face allows more mass to be positioned in the areas of the clubhead that help to optimise launch conditions and MOI. Finally, by removing a significant amount of mass from the centre of the club head through CNC milling, and strategically positioning it around the perimeter with tungsten weighting offers one of the most forgiving irons on the market.

PING G700

In designing the G700, PING’s highly regarded engineers have created an iron that provides golfers with increased power and forgiveness by combining the benefits of a holly-body design with a thin steel face, which has resulted in the brand’s longest and highest-flying iron to date.

Maraging steel, also featured in G400 Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Crossovers, is one of the most formidable alloys known, and is regularly used in the aerospace industry, where strength and flexibility are required. However, when it comes to golf, these make for excellent face material to offer greater flexing for faster ball speeds.

Specifically, the hollow-body construction of the steel head opens the door for an internal geometry design that takes weight away from the club face, resulting in flexing equivalent to a metal wood, helping to deliver results that will impress regular golfers.

TaylorMade P790

The TaylorMade P790 iron offers golfers a forged players distance iron engineered with new SpeedFoam Technology, and remarkable feel in a medium-compact head design, with a thinner topline and reduced offset. The iron features a soft, 8620 carbon steel body combined with a high-strength forged 4140 carbon steel WrapFace in a hollow body deisgn.

The hollow cavity uses SpeedFoam Technology, a new proprietary construction which serves a dual purpose of generating ball speed as well as the management of sound and feel. SpeedFoam, injected into the clubehad, provides face support and damping properties. The incorporation of the WrapFace cut-thru Speed Pocket on the sole with extreme flexibility in the lower part of the clubface creates greater forgiveness and consistency.

Finally, the ultra-thin 1.75mm face thickness with re-engineered Inverted Cone Technology is optimised for the slightly smaller face area. Reduced face thickness at the edge of the face increases flexibility from heel to toe, and low on the clubface.

Titleist 718 T-MB

The Titleist 718 T-MB began as the ultimate utility iron but has grown into a full set of uniquely designed irons that deliver distance at every loft. A hollow-body, multi-material construction utilises high-density tungsten and a thin unsupported face to create faster ball speeds, while still offering a Tour-validated look and feel.

Furthermore, improved CG progression for optimised launch and spin produces higher shots that go far and land soft, allowing for an aggressive style of play. The muscle-back shape produces a powerful combination of high launch and forgiveness, with a playable trajectory that every golfer would enjoy.
