Golf and Sport Reacts to Sergio's Masters Success

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 10 Apr 2017

It had taken him 74 attempts, but FINALLY Sergio Garcia was a major champion. His enthralling battle with Justin Rose left us with a Masters champion, and there have been few more popular winners in the storied history of this great event. Some of the biggest names in golf and sport reacted to the Spaniard's brilliant triumph.

Four-time major champion, Rory McIlroy, who had been seeking to complete the career grand slam, was backing Garcia to finally have his own taste of success in one of the game's four most prestigious tournaments.

Fellow Ryder Cup player, Martin Kaymer enjoyed his best showing at the Masters, and the two-time major winner paid tribute to both competitors following their historic battle on Sunday.

Ernie Els, playing in what is likely to be his final Masters, noted the significance of Sergio winning on the birthday of the legendary Seve Ballesterso, who passed away six years ago. He aslo had words for Justin Rose.

14-time major champion, Tiger Woods, who Garcia has a complicated relationship with, was among the first to comment on the winning moment, congratulating the 37-year-old.

Iconic tennis player and keen golfer, Rafa Nadal also tweeted his delight at Garcia picking up a major title. (Translation: What a great @TheSergioGarcia very exciting after so many years fighting so much !, many congratulations! What a joy!)

It wasn't the Sunday that Rickie Fowler had hoped for, but the likeable American shook off that disappointment to pass encouraging words onto Sergio.

Legendary Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps was also watching and tweeted his respect towards the champion.

Defending champion, Danny Willett had the honour of placing the green jacket on Sergio, and he looked delighted when doing so!

Two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson was already looking towards next year's Champions Dinner.

Thomas Pieters,  who enjoyed a superb debut at Augusta, also tweeted the Spaniard.

We certainly agree, big man.

But the final word goes to Justin Rose, whose determination and quality made this Masters a joy to behold. His grace and attitude has always been impeccable, and it was once again as he warmly congratulated Garcia.

Next year, Justin. We'll be right behind you.
