Pro Shot Golf Club MK Review

Short days in winter mean early tee times and no chance of a sneaky nine after work. BUT there are other ways to get your golf fix and recently I visited Pro Shot Golf Club in Milton Keynes.

Described as MK’s Largest Indoor Golf Centre, situated in Stacey Bushes close to Junction 14 of the M1 with five large bays offering a range of services, including membership, lessons and the ability to play 90 courses from all over the world, this is one of a kind in the surrounding areas. A licenced bar, with a seating area along with a huge TV and Sky Sports on offer, ensures that Pro Shot Golf Club meets the needs of golfers and non golfers a like.

With two types of simulation on offer, I tried both over two sessions. 

First up TruTrack 2 which is in multiple bays.

Dubbed as the industry standard of golf simulation software this technology offers point of impact capturing the critical data at the point of impact. Rows of sensors measure the club path and face at impact in addition.

One word, FUN! Four of us spent a few hours playing Pebble Beach and it really was great fun, offering solid graphics and playability. We had a couple of “flyers” and also shots that were a bit off in distance but overall the feedback was accurate. It really is a combination of a computer game and golf, allowing you to see the hole or shot prior to taking it and lining up your intended aim. As with other indoor facilities the putting was not trialled instead, we had a great time selecting random putts based on distance. So, you may knock it to four feet and TruTrack 2 decides that you will take two putts, but similarly when you hit it to 45 feet it could go the other way and get a huge cheer when it says ONE!

Prices (per bay not per person and you can have four people per bay), off peak (Mon to Fri 0900 – 1700) is £18.00 and on peak (Mon to Fri 1700-22:00, Sat 0900-2200 and Sun 0900-1800) you’re looking at £28.00 per hour and off peak. To get 18 holes in for a four ball would be around two and a half to three hours. (Depending on how many shots you take!)

The second simulator is the one you see all the pros using on the range – TrackMan.

On my second visit we solely used the TrackMan and I have to be honest I was blown away! Using dual radar technology which provides the players with statistics in two categories – ball flight data and club data.

Now, I played nine holes at Carnoustie and it was stunning. Playing the course which takes local weather into account and you line up your shot as you would on the course rather than using the computer screen. The accuracy was incredible, the distances I hit on the course were bang on. The graphics were of an incredibly high standard as well.

But playing a round on here, despite being fun is seriously underusing what else TrackMan offers.

Used all over the entire world by all the top professionals who want to dial in and gain as much accurate data as possible. It is endless, but the wedge test I took was a real eye opener! TrackMan gives you a number of specific yardages and you hit your shot to that distance (or so you think), after a set amount of shots you get given a handicap for this and over time whilst working on your wedge distance control, look to improve over time. It’s an area (you can set different range of distances as needed) which can’t fail to improve your game.

There is another option which we didn’t have time for, but you hit ten shots with each club in your bag and this begins the total game plan. Really cool, but time consuming and that’s where the only real downside is: Price. The TrackMan is set up only in one bay and costs £40 per hour on peak and £30 per hour off peak.

Coupled with the offer of lessons which vary in cost depending on membership I would see this as the perfect way to utilise the amazing functionality of TrackMan.

Pro Shot Golf Club is now coming up to its third year of operation, which shows that they are doing something right in a market which is very challenging. Golfers want to play golf, but as the nights draw in and the weather gets cold, grab a few mates and head down for a round here.

For me TrackMan is more of a learning tool, but for a round with mates the TruTrack 2 wins me over!
