What the club says: The original Darley Golf Course seems to date from around 1910. The present course, with an original 'bogey' (par) of 71 was opened on June 9th, 1951.

If Darley is slightly shorter than Lochgreen it is certainly tighter with unforgiving heather and gorse hugging both sides of many fairways. A relatively benign opening only serves to accentuate the challenge presented by the subsequent holes, with a particularly difficult stretch coming between the 5th and 15th.

Darley is indeed a challenge demanding the straightest of tee shots to avoid the renowned Scottish hazards of heather, gorse and whin which abound.

Challenging, strategic and a true test of golf is how the locals describe Darley, which, like its sister course Lochgreen is also considered of the links variety. Darley is rated as the fourth most difficult course in Scotland to play to your handicap!

Can't fault this course, greens were as good as some courses could only hope to achieve in the summer. All credit to the green keeping staff for having the course in such fine condition for the first week in January.

Course was in good condition despite wet weather. Most hole presented a different challenge and the rough could be quite punishing

Troon Darnley is a fantastic test for the mid handicapper who drives the ball well. Fair layout although the rough was quite flat when I played. Very good greens condition.

This is a very good golf course and exceptional value for money - if you want to play a proper links course on a budget, this is the course for you.

Of course, as it's a links course you need to be prepared for the odd outrageous bounce from the middle of the fairway into the deep stuff (or vice versa). The fairways are links-land and the greens are very true, and a reasonable pace. The bunkers are brutal - steer clear!

The course is also fairly tight with gorse, heather and deep rough just off the fairways, but a lot of the rough was fairly wispy so you could usually find your ball and hack it out. At 6000 yards off the yellow tees it's long enough without being a slog.

The highlights were some really good holes: the 5th and 13th are beasts of par 4s, and the 9th is a cracking par 3.

Overall, highly recommended.

Note that it's a municipal and it's by the seaside so you will get dogwalkers and other folk wandering across it, but everyone was very friendly.

Quite a tight testing course.Plenty of punishment should you stray offline from the tee.Tight fairways, and plenty of gorse mean straight drives are a must.Several pretty holes. The round played today was my 1st visit to this course which meant finding our way round was sometimes quite difficult due to a good few hundred yards between some tees and having to cross a busy road on a couple of occasions. However,I would play it again without a doubt
