What the club says: This superb course was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and is of international repute. It is situated in the Sierra de Mijas with stunning views of the mountains and beyond. Alhaurin is a challenging track that features lush greens and fairways set amongst the pine trees. Good course management and accuracy is needed if you're to avoid the trees, bunkers and water features. The undulating course is as testing a walk as it is a golf challenge so you might need a buggy if you're to keep your concentration up through the closing holes.

Al haurin hidden gem
Alhaurin Golf course designed by the great seve ballasteros.A very tough course. Ruggid terrain on front 9 and beautiful open plain on the back 9. The course has likely been overlooked in past few years due to the development of la cala resort but when this course was designed it would have been one of the best in the area. The views are stunning and clubhouse is fantastic.

AVOID
Where do I start. We arrived for our 2pm tee time in plenty time(12 of us paid around 1kEuros to play here). Had a nice bite to eat pre round and a beer, went down to get buggies at 1:50....first group then teed off at 2:30 - the staff in the shop claimed no responsibility and that 'This happens at every golf course'. All of the buggies were on the course (despite their being around 14 sitting stationary at the first tee). Anyway, we put that behind us...first group tees off gets to first fairway....buggy dies of death. Again, just got on with it. The course itself is absolute carnage - there is no guidance on where to hit and every shot is blind. The par 3s are ludicrously short where you could probably use a putter off the tee. As we didn't tee off till 2:30 we only got to play 16 holes in the light again through no fault of our own. on the run to 18 another buggy died in basically pitch darkness. I'd avoid this place at all costs.Reviewer Rating

Course has improved - well worth a visit
I have played Alhaurin many times over the last 4 years when on holiday.Since my last visit a lot of trees, bushes and shrubbery have been cut back or removed making the course even more enjoyable.
The fairways are in very good condition as are the green which play very true - it's not the easiest course but a very enjoyable and rewarding course

Very hard first nine holes
The course looks great but the first nine holes are really difficult. Very easy to lose balls from what you think is a decent teeshot. I found it not to my liking, not just because I didn't play too well but I didn't like the fact that hitting a great tee shot I couldn't find my ball several times.(Round played: Apr 2019 - Score: 90 Handicap: )

Challenging Course
The club is now under new ownership and great efforts being made to restore good will. The Fairways are tight in places with good condition greens throughout. We were warned about previous thefts from buggies and therefore took additional care however other courses in Southern Spain are suffering similarly. The course professional ensured that the day went smoothly and enjoyably for all. I would recommend a visit to this course.Reviewer Rating

a Fantastic course
A very tight and tricky course, you must think about the course layout and play the percentage shot. Do your self a favor and spend 5 euros on the par shot score saver.(Round played: May 2018 - Score: 86 Handicap: 13.5)

Awful.
First off, this course has stunning views on the first nine. But that’s as good as it gets. The tees and fairways are in terrible condition, the bunkers will ruin your clubs with all of the stones that are in them and the greens are average at best. We played on Good Friday and they’d obviously packed the course out, which was annoying but understandable, but we then had a stroppy marshal coming and telling us to speed up, even when he could quite clearly see that we were waiting for people in front to clear and who in turn were also waiting. Past reviews saying that this place is tatty are pretty much spot on. I urge you not to bother with Alhurain, there are much better courses in the area.Reviewer Rating

DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE!!! This was the second time I had played Alhaurin. The first time was a challenge and I mistakenly thought that the fact that it had been a very wet few days and it was raining when we played meant it would be better on a lovely hot day. With stunning views over the hills it must be a better experience second time around...how very wrong I was. The whole course looks like it needs a lot of money spent on it. The greens were atrocious, worse than most fairways you will play. The tees were almost as bad and only areas of the fairway could be regarded as in acceptable condition. The real issue is the layout. I cannot for one minute believe that the great Seve Ballesteros designed this place. Given he was not the straightest player off the tee and loved a recovery shot from a tough spot, it seems mind-boggling that he came up with this. The front nine holes, for the most part, require laser-accurate shots to very narrow fairways followed by approaches to very small greens. If you miss the fairways on the front nine by more than 5 yards, your ball is gone. No Seve-esque recovery shots, just a reach to the bag for yet another ball. The "highlight" of the insanity is the par 5 6th hole where you tee off from about 30 metres above the tiny fairway then sling 90 degrees to the right down a narrow shute of a fairway to a green that, if missed long, left or right, means a guaranteed lost ball. The 9th hole is a long par 4 with lost ball vegetation on the right and OB on the left. Not content with that challenge there are two trees slap bang in the middle of the fairway.
The back nine is a little bit more open and slightly less barmy but there are still stupid holes e.g. the straight downhill par 4 13th where you are best to take a 9 iron off the tee and the par 5 15th where the fairway slopes severely from left to right towards a death drop into the cabbage. As the course was playing firm, good drives were lost into yet another ravine.
There is literally no scope for wayward shots at this course and given that it mainly plays host to holiday golfers, it is no surprise that it has no money to spend on the course. Do yourself a favour and do not play here. There are many far better and far more enjoyable courses in the area.

I imagine that Seve had great fun designing this, do take a buggy as it is a long hilly trip. Hang on in the front nine and stay calm and accurate on the back nine and you can score.

Great course though with great views of the surrounding areas. Take a lot of balls as there are a lot of blind tee shots and you'll lose loads of balls on your first round there.
On the downside, we visited during the US Open and were shocked to find that the clubhouse closed at 9pm on the Sunday! For a golf resort not to stay open and show the golf is unacceptable really!
