What The Club Says

Situated in the old Walton Hall estate, this is generally regarded as the premier municipal course in the north of England. It began with nine holes in 1971, was extended and redesigned six years later by Dave Thomas and Peter Allis, and is now a championship standard 6800 yards with 3 par 3's over 200 yards long.

In a picturesque parkland setting, with fine views from the 13th tee, it boasts many mature trees and a lot of water which comes in to play on seven of the holes. The course was featured in the BBC Golf Magazine article "The Best Courses in Britain for under aTenner a Round", Summer 1994.

Great course. Tee off areas need attention and need to be flat. Bunkers not raked but this is down to people not bothered... Greens are looking alot better.... Need ball cleaners around the course, price has gone up quite a bit maybe to much tbh.

society

I had orgaanised a day with the Professional, o far so good, the society had visited some years before when privately owned, it was quite a shock to see the demise of the facilities. Food was ordered to inclyde breakfast baps, a two course for after the game. We found that no clubhouse food facilty was available, we were told to use a cafe some two hunfred yards from the course. we also hastily organised sandwiches from Costco for afternoon food. 6 buggies ordered and society tee times, we received four buggies and found people had booked tee times. the tee boxes turned out to be as expected if playing a municiple course, as did the fairways and the greens. What a shame, a really good golf course and decent test of play with beautiful views from some tees ruined. no members wanted to return. I leave it at that.

Returned after 12 years+

With recently having a New hip nothing like getting back in the Golf mode. I'm a bugger for punishment and love a challenge that is what i found on doing the full 18 holes. Actually by mistake i did 19 by playing the 17 twice. Dozy me not knowing to cross the road to pick-up the 8th hole
Its very scenic course and hard on the legs with so many inclines on 80% of the Holes. Be aware of the kickbacks, even on a good Tee drive can be diverted hitting an area of mound as i found on a few holes. A very enjoyable round as the holes give you a great variation of the dangers as described on the course website, so take notes as they can be beneficial. The ground crew have done a great job and were working on cutting at the time i was golfing.
As for the greens condition after recent hot weather they are almost 100%, with small areas that still need that personal touch. Overall it was a great long day. The 18 holes of golf took me 5 hours around the 3.4 mile course, lucky i had an electric trolley, saving pushing it up the hills.
Advice worth thinking about Buggy hire if you're deciding to do the full 18 holes.
I hope to return again to try knocking down my score like all other golfers who practice the game. Great course worth a visit if you haven't tried it.

Let Down By Staff

Visited there last Saturday, with 11 other society members. Course was in really good condition but the day was ruined by the staff in the pro shop. They had confirmed that we would have two buggies, but when we arrived they had no record of it on their system. That left us with 8 and the other 4 had to go back home.
