Tain A Gem

Tain Golf Club, what can I say? An absolutely fantastic experience
This course is a must for any Highland Itinerary.
A warm welcome from the Shop Staff, literally “marked our card” with gems of information.
I cannot praise this course highly enough, condition, even in mid October, was outstanding, fairways incredible, greens were so pure. The mixture of holes was wonderful, rough wasn’t too penal, unless you were wild off the tee, so, made for a great playing experience.
The greens staff should be commended highly.
The finish was outstanding, two very different Par 3s, 16 & 17, and a brilliant risk and reward par 4 18th.
All in all, just a brilliant experience, and at the price, an absolute bargain.
Get yourself there, and just play it.

A true test and a natural beauty

Tain is a truly exceptional golf course.
It has some very unique holes and must be one of the hardest courses ever played by the undersigned. This Tom Morris chappy knew his stuff. It is a true test of natural beauty. The wind can be brutal and some of the holes even more so. The 16th an 17th holes are both par 3s, both totally different and both a true test especially in the prevailing wind. Word of warning avoid the water and deep bunkers on both! There is more water than you think or can even see and the pot bunkers can prove exceptionally hard to get out of.
The greens are fast, run true and very compact.
The opening hole is a bit strange, drive straight and down the fairway and then an 8 or 9 will get you on to the green..You'll be aiming to get the ball over a fence and a road. Avoid the left as there is long nasty grass and gorse. The 3rd is a longish par 4 stroke index 2. Tricky. The 9th a lovely par 4 dog right. Cut the corner at your peril, but don't go long or you'll end up in a tricky bunker. I hit a great drive, but not knowing the course went long.
The 11th has a big mound just in front of the green with a marker on it. You'll need a good tee shot and an amazing second iron. Don't go l9ng or you'll end up on mud flats.
Overall I think this course is a 9/10. It is brilliant. We will play it again and I may even join as a country member. Finally pro shop staff (Graham) friendly and very helpful.

Playing at Tain is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. As early as the 3rd hole you realise a golfing challenge awaits you - but the course has a tremendous lay out. The unique 11th with it's stunning outlook over the Dornoch Firth is the signature hole. Playing in a 40mph wind made the course all the more interesting, in particular the par 3 17th! Made very welcome. The club has great facilities. Highly recommend.

This course is one of the hidden gems of the Highlands, played many times as my parents now live there a hard but fair course if you keep your drives straight, tricky greens usually hidden by nasty bunkers but makes it all the more challenging, excellent shop & clubhouse just love the place
