Royal Winchester Golf Course
I played at the Royal Winchester Golf Course earlier this year during a weekday. The weather was kind to us and the course was in general good shape. I must mention that the staff in both the Pro Shop and the Club house were fantastic, even if their prices were a bit on the high side. The course is a parkland style with very big fairways and not much rough and the ground staff do a good job, however the course itself was a bit on the boring side. If I was to describe the course design I would compare it to a magnolia paint, safe but boring. There were no memorable feature holes, the only thing that stuck in my mind was that you had to cross a live fairway to get from one hole to the next by peering around a hedge to see if there were any golfers on the tee box.
Pace of play was another concern, there were two of us in a buggy, but the round still took over 4 ½ hours to complete. The slow playing members, playing in groups of three did not allow us to play through, even when the opportunity arose.
The halfway hut was also disappointing and very costly as I found to my detriment as a small bag of crips (23g) labelled “not to be sold individually” cost an eye watering £1.75. I did mention this on my return to the club house, but they did not what to know what practices are carried out at the halfway hut, which is very concerning not just as the pricing level, but possibly no visibility at hygiene level?
Would I play here again, probably not as there are other courses such as Liphook, Blackmore, Hindhead, Hayling, etc that offer more features and a challenging course for the same pricing structure.

Challenging downland course, lush and green
I have played the Royal a few times over the years. It was in a very lush and green condition when played this time but it can be hard and fast if dry. Greens were a bit soft and were not rolling as well as they can. It is a challenging course with long par 3 holes and long par 4 holes that typically play into the wind. Great views and a lovely clubhouse.Reviewer Rating

Vastly improved
Reviewed this course a while ago and was disappointed with the condition, what a difference a couple of months makes, I was impressed with the quality of the course fairways are like walking on carpet, greens look nice and roll lovely, bunkers are a lot better, very impressive and apparently they have a really good new green keeper starting this week, looking forward to seeing what results he can bring to the courseReviewer Rating

Testing course
This is a course that is set out well and is very testing, the greens are nice but fast but the rest of the course is in a bad condition, bunkers are inconsistent and there is so much GUR around the course making it look poor, the facilities are good and the clubhouse is lovely and food is good, everyone is very friendly but the condition of the course lets it downReviewer Rating

Good downland course, generally in good condition
Have played here a fair few times. Interesting layout with two slightly contrasting nines, the front is downland, the back os more parkland. Generally in good condition but crows have had their way with some areas of the fairways and greens needed a cut when I played. Very enjoyable place to play. Make sure you stay for a drink on the veranda. Great views.(Round played: Sep 2021 - Score: 77 Handicap: 3.5)

Great condition, tight and challenging
This is a tough golf course - you need to be very straight off the tee and solid with your putting to score well. Despite the greens having been hollow tined and scarified a couple of weeks earlier they were still firm and fast. The front nine is downland and the back is more parkland. All par 5s are reachable with two good shots and there are a good few risk-reward holes.(Round played: Sep 2019 - Score: 75 Handicap: 3.6)

Some of the best greens around
Royal Winchester is a traditional club that gave us a very friendly welcome as visitors. It is laid out on top of a couple of hills and so is very exposed. We had very strong winds when we played making it play very tough when combined with the rock hard fairways. On most holes, there is deep rough, often marked as OB, to the side of each fairway. You do need to find the fairways to score well but they are fairly generous. The condition of the course is amazing. The tees, bunkers and greens are immaculate, the greens being the smoothest and quickest I have played in a long time. The bunkers are all small pot bunkers, revitted with astroturf which makes them penal but very tidy. It almost plays like a links course. Well worth a visit if you can.(Round played: Jul 2018 - Score: 81 Handicap: 4.3)
