Hmmm.
First, the positives. The layout has matured over the years, nice views, pace of play is fine and the fairways were half decent. The main downside is the greens (see pictures) and the state of the holes themselves. Yes, there had been a few heavy showers over the last 24 hours, so ... the obvious thing to do would be to move them. I enquired about this afterwards and the pro / manager stubbornly, and bluntly said he was of the opinion that they "were as good as Brocket Hall" and that he played on them and saw no issue. I kid you not.
I suggested that just shy of £27 for a weekday round with the greens in this sort of a dismal state didn't represent anything like good value. He maintained that he thought they were "good". I said we'd have to agree to disagree. The greens were okay in areas. But the hole locations were in a very sorry state.
I will put photos below and you can judge for yourself. Are these good greens? I played at Aspley Guise two day before, and these were what you'd call "good". The greens at Panshanger are slow, bumpy, worn around the hole, crowned to hell, divoted and muffed in so the hole was as much as 75% of the actual size it should be.
And if he types a retort below this to the contrary then he's even more of a ... than he's already proven to be. He added that the holes would be changed the following day, as it was their Captain's Day. To which I said "that's all well and good, but how does that help me today...paying full whack?"
He was less than understanding. Neither of us were rude, nor heated. There's no point talking to someone who's that unwilling to listen. So here's the pics. I did mention the positives to him, as I'm always keen to provide fair, objective and unbiased reviews for the benefit of would-be visitors. Please note, the pro is no longer Richard May. He left years ago.

Disgraceful!
No enforcement of tee times. By midday they were running at least 45 minutes late. A marshal told us it was because of a slow society, but did nothing about it?Reviewer Rating

Worth a visit
Not an easy course to play, with some tight fairways and well placed bunker. Mostly in good condition although some tee boxes were looking worn, and large stones in some bunkers. But worth a visit.Reviewer Rating

Very Good Value
Reviewed Feb 2024 Winter rules. Considering the weather conditions, wet and soggy underfoot the course is in good condition and is still open. Never crowded apart from in height of summer. very challenging course particularly for anyone with a slice. Greens running well despite being wet and spongy.Reviewer Rating

One of the best Public Courses in the Area
Panshanger course is a very well designed public course offering very good value for money. The course has very interesting and challenging holes. It is very difficult for right handed players who fade, (Slice), the ball, which to be honest is most of us. Many of the fairways run right to left and there are some very hard dogleg left holes. The greens recently have been slow but that is not always the case.
Well worth trying out, I have never played with someone who didn't want to come back and play it again.

Tough
Interesting course with lots of blinds shots and local knowledge is key. Luckily I played with some members so was given some idea of where we were supposed to be going. It was very dry so the ball ran further and as a lot of the fairways slope left to right, keeping out of the rough and on the short stuff was a challenge. The greens looked fast but were not so as we are used to quick greens, kept leaving puts short. Pretty intimidating first hole.Reviewer Rating

I have been meaning to play Pashanger for ages and wish I had played sooner. The course was in good condition even after an overnight downpour. Very good value for money at ?16, the sand in bunkers could be better but at that price I'm being picky.Reviewer Rating

Challenging Course but needs work!
Good course layout, but definitely needs work. The fairways weren't cut very well, and you could not distinguish between them and the first cut. This could be an excellent course, but just needs the greenkeepers to step up a bit.
