What the club says: Playgolf Colchester was formerly known as Lexden Wood Golf Club. The main course 18 hole course was redesigned and redeveloped in the winter of 2006/ spring 2007, at a cost of £1m by Jonathon Gaunt, course architect. He has added another 1000yds in distance to the previous layout, adding new greens and tees as well as reconstructing and adding nearly 80 new bunkers. The greens are USGA specification so provide great consistency all year round, and the large teeing areas enable us to provide all year play without the need for winter mats.
With the river Colne running through the course and also some spectacular views the Colne valley and the nearby picturesque village of West Bergholt

Improving
New owners have invested a large chunk of money into the course with improved greens, tees and bunkers. New menus make the restaurant a much better destination to eat. Along with crazy golf, footgolf, driving range with Trackman & a gym, Lexden Wood is well on its way to becoming the best course in Colchester. For those of you that haven’t visited in a while it’s well worth another chanceReviewer Rating

New owners
The course welcomed new owners in January 2025. They have spent a substantial amount of money to upgrade the course. Results are starting to show although there is still some way to go. If you haven''t visited for a while I would certainly advise you to give it another tryReviewer Rating

Work in progress
Course has an interesting layout & u can see the work What's going on, all bunkers are being redesigned, fairways are good, some greens need tlc, but tee boxes aren't great. However having said all that, give it a year & it should be an above average course. Keep up the good work improving it. The clubhouse, food & staff all greatReviewer Rating

Needs to be better
I am hoping the course will improve. It has been a hard winter and so wet . I am a member and I will not renew my membership if things do not improve. The fairways are like rough with buttercups and dandelions in them . Greens are not bad but IMO better a month ago ..Reviewer Rating

Tight course
Now called Lexden Woods, the course is very challenging with tight, narrow fairways and unforgiving rough. Though not particularly long, you certainly have to be straight with your shots and think your way around. Given the amount of rain which has fallen recently, the course was still playable, with temporary tee boxes. The greens were surprisingly good. Will certainly return once the weather improves.Reviewer Rating

Work being done
I am a member at this course and the new owners doing a great deal of work . If coming to play the course please bear that in mind . They are doing a good job . To rectify the bunkers is a major project and many are GUR . I think it is a clever lay out as it is not reach for the driver and let it rip .Reviewer Rating

Excellent course in fantastic condition, tricky in parts a course you definitely have to think your way around. The facilities here are amazing with a lovely bar area with friendly staff. The driving range is nice and there is also an American Golf shop onsite. There are also lots for the family here as there’s an adventure golf course for the kids and also a foot golf and academy course.(Round played: Aug 2019 - Score: 87 Handicap: 19.6)

Let's be honest!
Firstly, the overriding feeling you get as you walk around the facilities is one of a profit oriented feeling. Almost as if loyal golf members have dropped lower down the pecking order, behind a family of 4 that want to play "mini-golf" and have a meal. This leads into my next point/observation. If you want turn up as a golfer, to practice or play you are cast aside to pave the way for a more fashionable clientele. From my own personal experience you cannot use the great driving range on the weekend between 11am-16:00pm because the "mini-golf" is open and of health and safety concerns! Which screams poor planning of where its located and poor construction!
This club used to be somewhere people wanted to play, now its a place that drives members out and looks only to strengthen its bank balance.

Good compact course with excellent facilities. Very slow competition play in front of us that needed to be managed better. One temp tee which on the website said they would never need. Greens quick, bunkers okraReviewer Rating
