What the club says: Thanks to its high elevation, Hawick Golf Course offers some of the most spectacular views to be found in the Borders. This becomes more evident as the course climbs from the 4th Tee, and meanders around the natural contours of the Vertish Hill.

Hawick Golf Club, the oldest golf club in the Borders, has been in existence since 1877. Located on the picturesque Vertish Hill on the outskirts of Hawick, where the famous brands of cashmere garments of Peter Scott, Pringle, Lyle and Scott, are produced. Most golfers will appreciate they have experienced a tough but fair test of their skills on this wonderful, and very interesting, golf course.

Really enjoyable challenge with amazing views. Kept the driver in the bag for the first three holes - got a bit more open after that.

Most scenic course in the Borders

In excellent condition after lockdown and we?ll worth a game if you've not played this hidden Borders gem - plenty of challenging holes and scenery to die for once you reach the summit - prepare yourself for a work out as it's quite hilly but the reward is well worth it .

Hawick is a classic example of James Braid's ability to take natural features and nurture them into an interesting and engaging set of challenges for golfers.
Yes it is very hilly and a test for the legs. It also requires some local knowledge, with a handful of blind shots. But most of all a successful golfer is required to play to a strategy; evaluate different shot options; take into account the effects of sweeping gradients, and; work out where to not to go! The third in particular is a design masterpiece, a par 4 of only mediocre length that features two distinct levels of fairway. The easier option off the tee veers right to the lower level, opening up a wider angle from which to attack the green but a second shot of 180 yards or so uphill. A successful drive down the tighter line on the left might leave as little as a 9 iron approach, but getting there requires an accurate draw. Get caught between stools and the next shot has to be played from the bottom of a deep gully with the pin not visible. A peach of a hole and preamble to the stunning sequence that crosses the top tier of Vertish Hill - like walking on the roof of the world. The finishing descent is also a joy to behold, due to the charming nature of the 16th and a seriously challenging 200 yard carry (and about 150 foot drop) to the 18th. All together a fantastic golf course in a stunning setting. Well played at Hawick, James Braid.

I dont know what has happened in the time of the last review till now but the changes to the course are not good. The course itself was in terrible condition with the rough being so high that you cant find your ball and if you do then you cant play it. The clubhouse was messy and smelly and the food was mediocre at best it seemed like all they did was heat it up. The views were good but they didnt make up for the poor service that we recieved.

Magnificent views form all over this really hilly course. Good supply of drinking fountains and the free players guide was ver useful. made to feel very welcome, once I found it he directions in the border Golf Director were not much use.

Despite the very wet weather the course was in superb condition. Very hilly and not for any one with a pacemaker. Water fountains distibuted around the course. Free playing guide very useful. Very friendly atmosphere. Only adverse comment direction not too accurate.
