What the club says: Five Lakes Resort hosts two contrasting and mature 18 hole parkland courses which have gained an enviable reputation in this part of the world.

The Lakes Course (Five Lakes Resort). This course, designed by Neil Coles, is used annually for regional PGA events and was the venue for the Nick Faldo Challenge. The course provides a testing examination for the better player as well as an enjoyable round for all standards. Water features strongly in the overall design of the Lakes Course, coming in to play on ten of the holes.

The Links Course (Five Lakes Resort) The Links course is renowned for its sweeping fairways and plush greens. With its strategically placed water hazards, sand bunkers and well guarded greens it proves an excellent challenge. Kept in superb condition all year round, the Links is slightly easier than the Lakes but a very enjoyable round nevertheless.

18 holes. Par 71. 6181 yards. Parkland.

Bad timing

The course, tricky in the wind with lightning fast greens that are borderline impossible to hold the ball onto. Fairways very brown and rock hard. As for the experience, horrible, seems like the place was happy to cram as many tee times in as possible making it a pathetically long round at 5 hours for a 3 ball. Take the money over a players experience, will not be visiting again.

Pleasantly surprised

A group of 8 of us played the Lakes Course at Five Lakes . I have moved to Colchester just over a couple of years ago and those I had spoken to had not given very favourable reports of Five Lakes . There were a large number of golfers playing both courses mainly society golfers . Pace of play was ok , greens in good conditions , fairways were no worse than other courses I have played after this dry Summer . I would not want to be a member at Five Lakes as seemed most of the trade were societies and would not be great turning up at 2pm as a member and finding yourself behind all these . I would certainly play the course again .

Improving condition

Played for the 2nd time since reopening after Lockdown. Only open Fri,Sat & Sun at present. Course condition improving after last week?s rain, greens still quite slow and uneven in places but looked like they are being sanded and seeded where necessary. Overall enjoyable round despite 45mph winds with good pace of play as most golfers want to play the tougher Lakes course. Great value for money at ?20

Tuesday Club at Five Lakes

A very blustery but sunny day at 5 lakes. This was the Lakes course and was in very good condition, greens in good condition although the approach first cut in my opinion was a little long. A very pleasant golf experience overall despite the fact there was no food at the hotel which was a litlle frustrating..

Beautiful course but very hilly. A buggy is recommended but a superb course. The resort has 2 course but the links being the better of the 2

The course was was well kept and challenging without being hard and pretty quiet. The greens were in nice condition. Tee positions are good and its not too hilly. Having a driving range on site is great. Have played many clubs it the area over the last 4 weeks looking for a membership was very keen to become a member of this club but due to their pricing policy and feeling discriminated against because of my age, with no apology or concession offered by their management i Could not recommend this course I am planning now to Join Burnham on crouch as their Management are very professional and accommodating.

Very disappointed

I am looking for a club to join for myself and a friend who works with me and tried Fives Lakes on Wednesday afternoon. We had a tee time booked and arrived a little early. We were greeted by a woman who was really friendly and she gave us the round for no charge and a free 100 balls between the two us for the driving range. We both felt really welcome and after using the balls we played the Links course. It is a nice course, a little flat and straight, but neither of us are very good so it is perfect for us. During the round it started to rain and we told the pair behind us to tee off while I put on waterproof trousers. We then talked to them walking the fairway and were told they paid £500ish for the year and to talk to Gary about membership. We then let them finish the hole and played the rest of the round. I was instantly joining as it definitely worth about £1100 for me to pay for our two memberships.

Unfortunately that was as good as it got. When I phoned the following morning I was told that membership would be £1100 each and that to get that price I had to be under 32, I am 45 and my friend is 48. I was completely thrown by this and just thought it was ridiculous. I kept coming up with examples of situations where no one with any intelligence would pay twice as much as the next customer. They offer no apology and think it is perfectly fine for two adults to play the same course and for one to pay twice as much as the other. I personally have never experienced anything like this and still can’t quite believe it. I want to join the club but I can not pay twice as much as another member. In my opinion, you would need to be a little stupid to do so. Would anyone watch the person if front of them at a till pay £500 for something and then pay £1000 for the exact same item. It’s insane.

I am genuinely gutted as I wanted to join but I am being discriminated against based on my age.

I have spoken to six friends who have all played for years and non of them have ever heard of this and none of them said anything that was nice about it. They all thinks it’s ridiculous.

The Links Course Five Lakes

Relatively easy course to play. Very nice sunshine and conditions to play in, signage directing you to course and practice facilities could be more prominent and easier to see.

A Hot one at 5 Lakes

A very straight course with very little contour. As I am a high handicapper I used my driver on 16 of the holes. Much better value in the afternoon as it is half price. Paid ?25 for an 8am tee off. Weather was excellent shot 41 on the back nine, so very please with that, included a birdie on the par 3 hole 15. Also it is stroke indies 8 so scored a rare 5 points????.

Five Lakes - Links

Mid June 19' and course is in fantastic condition. Especially the greens. Definite a 8 out of 10. Only gripe was having to repair over golfers divots on the greens.

Five lakes lakes and links course

Played here as an over night stay deal which was value for money, hotel was exelant and so was the food. Both courses need work to be done on the bunkers, the fairways and greens were in good condition, the lakes is the better course, the links has a very bland front nine but a good back nine, would recommend it for a weekend golf.

Great course

We had a 11.04 tee time today, this was great. The weather really nice, my first time played, and it was like having the course to ourselves as didn’t see a sole. Condition was excellent and would definitely recommend and return.
