Improving condition
Played for the 2nd time since reopening after Lockdown. Only open Fri,Sat & Sun at present. Course condition improving after last week?s rain, greens still quite slow and uneven in places but looked like they are being sanded and seeded where necessary. Overall enjoyable round despite 45mph winds with good pace of play as most golfers want to play the tougher Lakes course. Great value for money at ?20Reviewer Rating

When I asked in the pro shop if the Links was as scruffy as the Lakes that we had played the previous day I should of known from his reaction that it was not going to be good.
The front nine is very flat and boring, tee boxes were scruffy and scarred and the bunkers had very little sand with a large amount of grass growing through, one of the worst nine holes I have ever played.
To be fair the back nine is a lot better and I wondered whether there was actually originally three nines with the first nine of the Links added to make to 18s.
The only decent hole I can remember was 18.

The Lakes course is a far better set up with many interesting holes, unfortunatly the greens had been spiked ,but can imagine they would be reasonably good .Cant fault the standard of hotel accom and food

golf...urm... not great, mainly due to condition being very poor, some greens had bird pecked holes in and worm casts i play off 7 but try reading the line.
it is worthy of a round but the condition needs to improve especially as greens are the most important part.
but there were alot of unhappy visitors on our day out.

A bit samey but enjoyable.
Played the Links Course with 3 others who stayed the night. The front 9 was not very interesting with lots of straight holes going up and down. Nearly every hole was driver off the tee. The course overall presents a challenge with the rough being extremely unforgiving. If you hit it off line you’re getting another ball out of your bag and going again. The greens had has some maintenance but still ran well. Bunkers were virtually all waterlogged even though the course was in good, dry and playable condition. Tee boxes could do with a bit of TLC as the grass was long and generally very, very uneven. There was a lack of fairway markers for yardages which made it a little difficult without the annoying laser binoculars everyone else seems to have. The other three stayed the night which I’m glad I didn’t. Our meal took 2+ hours to arrive which is astonishing considering its a set menu of only 3/4 choices per course and when it did arrive it wasn’t a meal I would be paid to eat. I heard the breakfast wasn’t any good either.
The Lakes course provided more of a challenge apparently and was well worth a go with a lot more dog legs and thinking holes.
If you are looking for an overnight getaway I probably wouldn’t recommend solely for the service in the hotel.

Pleasantly surprised
A group of 8 of us played the Lakes Course at Five Lakes . I have moved to Colchester just over a couple of years ago and those I had spoken to had not given very favourable reports of Five Lakes . There were a large number of golfers playing both courses mainly society golfers . Pace of play was ok , greens in good conditions , fairways were no worse than other courses I have played after this dry Summer . I would not want to be a member at Five Lakes as seemed most of the trade were societies and would not be great turning up at 2pm as a member and finding yourself behind all these . I would certainly play the course again .Reviewer Rating

The Lakes course is OK. It has a nice level of definition and was in reasonable condition. It is a reasonable test of golf although I played to my handicap more or less with a crushing hangover which makes it a bit easy in my book.
The Links course is a terrible course. Its basically just a few farmers fields with some greens and a few bunkers. The bunkers were dreadful. The greens had tufts of grass randomly poking out of them. The whole course is bereft of definition and character. I would be insulted to pay more than a fiver to play there. I would recommend that they sell the land back to the farmer and forget about it.
The club actually does have decent practice facilities.

Links - was better than the other reviews on here lead me to believe, by no means the greatest course I have played but it was an enjoyable challenge. ps you need to keep an eye on the ball when it leaves the fairways.
