Well laid out course
I used to play this course once a year, in March, but hadn't played it since 2010, so was expecting some changes. Shortly after arriving I learned that a large number of trees had been cut down, so the course is now far more open than previously. The layout however has not changed, and this is on the positive side. It seems strange to start with two par 5's, especially when the card shows only one other par 5 unless you play from the back tees, when the 17th becomes a fourth par 5. There are also 5 par 3's, two on the front 9 and three on the back, so plenty of scope for 'nearest the pin' choices, although you would have to wait for the 16th to see the longest par 3, which for us was into a fairly stiff breeze. I hit a gentle driver and made the green! The clubhouse has been refurbished since I was here before, and looks really good, and I have to say the food we had was very, very good, and the staff looked after us very well. We had 18 holes preceded by a full English breakfast, and followed by a 2 course dinner, with coffee and mints to follow included in the cost, so I can't really comment on individual costs for the food.
Outside there is a large putting green, which can also be used for chipping on one side. There are a number of nets for driving practise, and if you allow enough time, there is a driving range in the middle of the course, although this might be just for lessons, you would need to check.
The greens had unfortunately not long been hollow-tined and top dressed, so we did not have the best experience with putting, but all courses need to keep up the maintenance, so just bad timing on our behalf. The greens themselves had some serious borrows on them.
As with most courses I have played this year, there were obvious sings of where the lack of rainfall had taken it's toll on the fairways, but preferred lies was in place to alleviate the poorer lies.
Bunkers were full of good quality sand making the greenside escapes a pleasure, but all the bunkers seemed to be very deep, being 3 to 6 feet to clear the lip. Very difficult therefore from the fairway bunkers, which you should try to avoid!
This is a course which I always enjoyed before, and still do, and would happily recommend, and will also be happy to return to again. One last addition, as I'm now in my 70's, I found the course quite flat and therefore easy to walk, even with the two roads to cross for the 6 holes (3rd to 5th and then 7th to 9th) on the front 9.

It still had remnants of recent maintenance work but the teeing areas and the fringes of the greens was well manicured and in general the course looked in excellent condition given the time of the year.

Classic downland/parkland course recent restored to original Colt desi
First time playing here on a fairly wet and rainy day. Stunning and traditional clubhouse, very well-maintained private club but only £55 with a county card is good value. We played from the back tees and it is a tough challenge. Well bunkered off the tee but generous fairways in the main landing spot but you will find heavy rough waiting if you do miss the fairyways. Greens were quick and true despite the rain. Only criticism is the bunkers are very inconsistent in terms of the amount and type of sand. A real variety of holes with some of the par 4 holes very long off the back tees. Well worth a visit - I hope to play again sometime on a dry day!Reviewer Rating
