What The Club Says

The club was orginally mapped out in 1905 by George Lowe the professional at Lytham St. Annes. Iin 1908 the course was redesigned by Alec (Sandy) Herd, former British Open Champion at Hoylake in 1902.

The course was altered and increased to 18 holes between its inception in 1905 and 1929, as well as many other alterations. It was however in December 1929 that the course was visited by James Braid, 5 times British Open winner and renowned golf course designer. James Braid suggested at the time, three new holes, over thirty bunkers, several new tee beds and mounds. The local paper called it extravangant! The layout of the course still remains the same after all this time, which is a testament to James Braid.

As well as being a pleasant place to enjoy a round of golf, there are also superb views across the town and surrounding villages, below Pendle Hill. On a clear day you can see the "Three Peaks" - Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent.

Moorland Cracker

Burnley Golf Club is one of Lancashire's finest moorland courses and a real hidden gem. While it isn't particularly long by modern standards, it more than makes up for it with clever design, demanding shot selection and superb greens that keep you thinking from the first tee to the last putt.
Built around the hillside, the front nine provides a stern test with several blind shots where course knowledge is a real advantage. The back nine is slightly more forgiving, but still requires accuracy and good course management. It's definitely a course that rewards repeat visits, becoming more enjoyable each time you play.
The conditioning is consistently excellent, with fast, true greens and well-presented fairways throughout the year. The welcome from the staff and members is always warm and friendly, adding to the overall experience.
One thing to note is the terrain, those able to tackle the climbs are rewarded with stunning panoramic views across Burnley, the surrounding villages and towards the iconic Pendle Hill.
A challenging, scenic and beautifully maintained course that's well worth a visit for golfers who enjoy strategy as much as power.

Very Challenging course

First time played this course, essentially built around a hill. Front nine quite tough, back nine a bit more forgiving. Knowing the course can be a significant advantage as quite a few blind holes. If mobility is an issue, avoid this course.
Well laid out , greens excellent . A very enjoyable challenge

Top moorland track

Burnley is a top moorland track, which will test & tease you. Although not relatively long, it will really have you thinking with some tricky decisions & greens.
It's a tough round first time round, as there are a number of blind shots, but once you know the course it's a delight.
It's always in great condition & you always get a friendly welcome.

Winter belter

Class place, pro super and welcoming and £12.50 for winter pairs is without doubt the best value in the UK. the layout is brilliant. first visit so a massive learning experience. the views alone are worth the entrance fee. shame the fairways are off limits with move to side / rough. great idea tho allowing clean and drop in rough not that I had a mud ball (unlike previous day up north) greens could have done with a roll TBH and foot print central but looked in good shape all the same. 100% going back a LOT.

Mr

This is a challenging short course, due to its, elevated and undulating terrain, flat lies are rare and greens equally difficult. Could do with more of a manicure to define areas and bunkers need more maintenance.

Great moorland track

Burnley is a great moorland course, seriously undulating, thick wiry rough & fantastic views.
Set at the foot of the Pennines there's hardly a flat lie in the place, the greens are fast & true & the fairways are superb.
It's not the longest in the world, but that doesn't matter with some of the strategic decisions that you have to make. Add to this the fact that's it's nearly always windy up there &'you have a true test of golf.
The welcome in the clubhouse s also great, plus the local members are always happy to see a visitor.

Lovely Round of Golf

Travelled from Liverpool prior to a wedding and played in the afternoon. Course was in tremendous condition and greens rolled true. Not a flat course but adds to the amazing views you can see from every tee.
Would highly recommend as a visitor and for people living nearby wanting a course to be a member of with pretty cheap fees.

Nice course worth playing

Always nice to play Burnley when it's decent weather, get great views of East Lancashire on a clear day like it was today. Course in great conditions, greens smooth and tricky (as usual). If not played there before, a few blind tee shots so beware, always tricky to score well here as it's a good test even on a nice day.
