The 2010 Ryder Cup was one of the most dramatic that we've seen, as Colin Montgomerie's European team won by the tightest of margins in an event that was pushed to a Monday finish due to bad weather suspending play twice.

But none of us will forget the scene when Graeme McDowell secured the decisive point - ensuring that Celtic Manor will forever hold a place in the hearts of many golf fans.

Since then, Celtic Manor has established itself as one of the UK's leading golf resorts, drawing in visitors from across Wales and beyond, with its location near Newport being ideal for those travelling on the M4 in search of a memorable experience.

Our travel partners Golfbreaks have superb packages and deals available to those who wish to tick this fabulous location off their list.

Celtic Manor

But if you still require convincing - and we can't think why you would - then here are some of the best reasons why Celtic Manor should leap to the top when you're next planning a golf break.

The Twenty Ten Course

2010 Course

Undoubtedly the main attraction at Celtic Manor, the Twenty Ten was specifically designed to stage the Ryder Cup, boasting many water hazards and exciting holes to provide the drama and volatility that matchplay demands. That makes it a thrilling layout to play, taking on those same shots that the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson faced.

Showcasing wonderful views across the Usk Valley, half of the holes feature water and it can stretch all the way to 7,493 yards from the back tees, meaning that it's a stout challenge that can be tailored for all standards of golfer.

If you've always wanted to walk in the footsteps of Ryder Cup legends, it doesn't get much better than this.

The Roman Road Course

Roman Road Course

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Roman Road is the oldest of the three courses at Celtic Manor, taking its name from the Roman highway that crosses its fairways to the nearby fortress town of Caerleon.

Previously a host of the Wales Open and Wales Senior Open, this is a layout with championship pedigree, and it takes full advantage of trees, streams and a lake to offer a stern examination of golfers who take to this wonderful course that would be worth playing on a visit by itself.

The Montgomerie Course

Colin Montgomerie established his legacy at Celtic Manor by contributing to this third course at the resort, which is renowned for its numerous elevation changes, allowing for many breathtaking vistas, but also a test of strategy as you seek to navigate the intricate nature of the holes.

One particular highlight is the 12th hole where you face a drive to the top of a rise and then the fairway plummets downhill dramatically through a frame of pine trees.

Superb Accommodation Options

The golf courses are tremendous, but the options you have for accommodation are splendid too. There are 332 rooms available at the Celtic Manor Resort, all refurbished to a supreme standard, with each en-suite being adorned with marble features, enhancing the opulent feel of the hotel.

For larger groups of golfers - which you see regularly here - the Hunters Lodges are the choice for you. Each of the lodges includes en-suite bedrooms, a fully-fitted kitchen, Sky TV, free Wi-Fi and extra space to relax. You can also enjoy the indoor sauna and outdoor hot tub as well as dining on the outdoor terrace.

Other fine options nearby include the Parkgate Hotel, Ty Newport, Coldra Court Hotel and The Manor House.

Fantastic Restaurants & Bars

Celtic Manor Restaurant

If you're staying at Celtic Manor, there are eight restaurants and various bars to choose from. These include the Olive Tree with its buffet offering, presenting a range of dishes to satisfy everyone, while the award-winning Signature Sixth Floor Restaurant, Steak on Six, takes things to another level. PAD (at The Manor House) serves up Asian-inspired cuisine, while the more casual atmosphere of the Cellar Bar will appeal to many. Overlooking the Roman Road Course, The Grill benefits from a magical spot, while Rafters at The Twenty Ten Clubhouse is another award-winning restaurant. If you love Mediterranean cuisine, then Casa Kitchen & Bar is the place to visit.

Enviable Location

What also helps Celtic Manor to stand out from the crowd is the location. Just off the M4, the resort is positioned on the outskirts of Newport, while it's only 16 miles away from Cardiff. For anyone travelling across the River Severn from England into Wales, Celtic Manor is both an easy place to reach and an easy place to love.
