The Race to Trump Turnberry

By: Golf Shake | Fri 13 Nov 2015

Entries are now open for the 2016 Northern Matchplay Golf Championship.

The popular competition is a season-long knockout tournament for category 1 & 2 amateur golfers across the North of England and Midlands. It attracts over 1,000 golfers annually and is an excellent way to play competitively at different golf courses.

Now in its 7th year there are Individual and Pairs competitions where golfers compete against fellow opponents in knockout rounds with the aim of reaching the 3-day, 54-hole Grand Final at the iconic Trump Turnberry.

In 2016 the Semi Finals are to be played at the fabulous Ganton Golf Club whilst Quarter Finals will take place over the famous Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa.

Tournament Organiser, Edward Battye, said, “I’m really pleased with the venues we have for the championship in 2016. Turnberry was perfect last year for our finals and to have arguably three top 100 in the World golf courses will hopefully provide a real incentive for golfers to sign-up.”

Prior to reaching the latter stages players must win through a maximum of five local knockout rounds. This includes the popular ‘home & away’ 36-hole 1st round which guarantees everybody a round away from their own course.

The 2015 the event was won by North-East duo Craig Penny, a +3 handicapper from Newbiggin, who partnered Jimmy Trewick (Burgham Park, 7 hcp) to the pairs title whilst Luke Higgins (Cow Nest Park, 5 hcp) landed the singles trophy.

The championship is open to male golfers with a competition CONGU handicap (maximum playing handicap limit 12) and entries can be made online via the championship website: www.northernmatchplay.com.

Entries close 31st March and the entry-fee is £30 per person.
