Footjoy complete Major Grand Slam following victory by Rory McIlroy in the USPGA

By: | Wed 15 Aug 2012

Footjoy Press Release

FootJoy, the #1 Shoe & Glove in Golf, claimed a historic Grand Slam of Major Championship titles on Sunday as brand ambassador, Rory McIlroy put on a stunning display of record-breaking golf to capture the 94th US PGA Championship by an emphatic eight-shots. Trusting the superior comfort, performance and athletic styling of FJ Sport™ golf shoes and the superior grip and feel of the FJ Pure Touch® glove, the 23 year-old was simply unstoppable as he showcased his incredible talent in the final-round, shooting a six under-par 66 to become the youngest ever two-time Major Champion.

After inclement weather halted play on Saturday afternoon, the Northern Irishman was forced to return to Kiawah Island’s testing Ocean Course early on Sunday morning to complete his third round. It was here that a clinical stretch of iron play and putting ensured he went into the final 18-holes with a commanding three-shot lead over his nearest competitors. Demonstrating experience and nerve beyond his years, McIlroy was positively flawless in his bogey-free final round as he lapped the field with a display of composed excellence. A 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole bought the house down and ensured he emulated his eight-shot triumph at the 2011 US Open Championship. The victory moves him back to #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings, which now features eight FJ loyalists, and sets him up with a strong chance of matching fellow FJ loyalist, Luke Donald’s achievement of winning both the European Tour's Race to Dubai and PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

McIlroy’s triumph in FJ Sport at The US PGA Championship marks a clean-sweep of golf’s most prestigious titles for FootJoy in 2012, as all four Major Champions chose to compete in the all-around excellence of the market-leading brand’s golf shoes. At The Masters, FJ brand ambassador Bubba Watson trusted the FJ ICON en-route to capturing the coveted Green Jacket. This was quickly followed by another win for FJ ICON at The US Open as Webb Simpson surged through the field to claim his national championship, whilst a dramatic finish at The Open Championship made it three wins in a row for FJ ICON.

FootJoy also maintained a dominant share of the shoe and glove counts at the season’s final Major Championship. An impressive 56% of the field chose to stride the fairways of Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course in FootJoy shoes, with the nearest competitor accounting for just 19% of the field. FootJoy also led the glove counts with 34% of the field trusting the superior grip and comfort of FJ’s array of market-leading products.

“Rory’s achievement last night was nothing short of extraordinary and secures a historic Grand Slam of Major Championship wins for FootJoy in 2012,” commented Russell Lawes, European Marketing Manager – FootJoy. “For our brand ambassadors to complete a clean-sweep of golf’s most prestigious titles is a magnificent accomplishment and is an undoubted sign of the quality and performance of the market-leading brand. To also end the season as the #1 Shoe and Glove at all four Major Championships is another fantastic achievement for everyone at FootJoy.”

Whether it is the all-round excellence of the FJ ICON™, the Xtreme Platform Stability of the all-new XPS-1™, the reliability and consistent performance of DryJoys Tour™ or the sports performance of the FJ Sport™, FootJoy remains the overwhelming favourite for golfers of all abilities around the world.
