Aegean Airline joins the Gtour Race to Cyprus

The Gtour, the U.K’s leading amateur Golf Series and Order of Merit Tour which takes place throughout UK at courses around the country is pleased to announce the signing of their new sponsor Aegean Airlines.

Aegean Airlines are the largest Greek airline and have been a Star Alliance member since June 2010.

The airline founded in 1987 is a multiple award winner of ‘Airline of the Year’ and ‘Regional Airline of the Year.

A spokesperson for Aegean was delighted to be sponsoring the Gtour’s ‘Race to Cyprus’ Tournament:

“For over five years, Aegean Airlines has supported Cyprus and Greece as specialist golf destinations.

We are the preferred carrier of the PGA Europe and the official carrier of both the PGA Greece and the Hellenic Golf Federation.

“Moreover, Aegean was the creator of the international golf tournament, “Aegean Airlines Pro-Am”, the first international golf tournament in Greece.

“For the first time, Aegean are now a proud sponsor of the ‘Gtour – Race to Cyprus’ tournament. We Pride ourselves in not charging excess baggage for the transportation of golf equipment on any domestic or international flights, even if exceeding the free baggage allowance.”

Open to all golfers whether you are a club golfer or not and whether you play off scratch or 28 (36 for ladies) you are welcome to take part in the Gtour where membership is free.

Building on two very successful seasons in 2009 and 2010, the Gtour Order of Merit was renamed ‘The Race to Cyprus’ following renewed partnership with De Vere, Srixon, Bunker Mentality, Golfbreaks.com, Aphrodite Hills and for 2011 the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.


The top 10 players will earn the right to compete in the grand final at Aphrodite Hills Cyprus, after a two-day semi final event to be held in November where to top-52 in the Order of Merit will compete for a seat on the plane.

There are two events left in the season before the semi-finals and the Order of Merit competition is based on best three scores and uses the unique Gtour scoring system which is points based and weighted on competitors and event position.

The next event is on Saturday 20 August at De Vere Dunston Hall followed by the final event of the season on Saturday 17 September at De Vere Mottram Hall.

Run by golfers for golfers ‘Gtour’ is the best amateur tour to play in where competitive and social golf go hand in hand.
