The best caddies in golf today
Good golf caddies are worth their weight in gold. Over the years there have been some stellar partnerships, with some bagmen (and women) becoming almost as well known as the players who employ them.
So who are the most notable caddies in the game today, and what makes them special? Remember that these individuals are on a hiding to nothing - they get little or no credit but are in the firing line if they get a yardage wrong or fail to remind their employer about things like wind direction.
Billy Foster
It is often forgotten that, early in his career, Foster carried Darren Clarke’s clubs. And in a move that stunned the world of golf, it was Foster who sacked Clarke, claiming that his employer was not making the most of his talent. Foster would go on to spend years carrying the bag for Lee Westwood before having a stint with Matthew Fitzpatrick. When they parted company, Collin Morikawa was quick to hire him. That partnership did not work out and Foster returned to Westwood in 2025. Some caddies are quiet and reserved. Not Foster.
Harry Diamond

Rory McIlroy was heavily criticised when he sacked long-time caddie JP Fitzgerald and replaced him with Harry Diamond, who is one of his best friends but had never caddied professionally, It seemed like an ill-conceived move and initially there were times when Diamond appeared to be out of his depth. But he has grown into the role and McIlroy gave him plenty of credit after winning The Masters in April 2025. Their close relationship is obvious for all to see and it is quite clear that Diamond knows how to make his boss relax on the course.
Ted Scott
Scott was at Bubba Watson’s side for the left-hander’s biggest successes. It is fair to say that he was often something of a verbal punch-bag for the American who would often criticise his man when things did not go right. But Scott knew when to keep his mouth shut. And guess what? He is now employed by a certain Scottie Scheffler, the world’s undisputed best golfer. They have a very different relationship. Scheffler is a pretty undemonstrative character, somebody who takes it all in his stride - and it is clear that Scott is having a ball at his side. And why wouldn’t he? He has earned millions of dollars as Scheffler’s bagman.
Joe LaCava
LaCava began his career working for Ken Green before Fred Couples employed him in 1990. The pair would win 12 PGA Tour titles, including the 1992 Masters and 1996 Players. He also worked for Davis Love III, Justin Leonard and Dustin Johnson before being hired by Tiger Woods. He carried Woods’ bag when he won his 15th major at The Masters in 2019. He is now looping for Patrick Cantlay. LaCava is outgoing, a caddie who celebrates loudly with his players and always makes his presence felt.
Michael Greller
The American is the epitome of the long-suffering caddie. He is, of course, the bagman for Jordan Spieth, one of the most vocal golfers on the planet. Spieth goes through every emotion in the book and they are directed at and shared with Greller. There are times when Spieth puts Greller through the ringer but through it all he always seem to know what to say to Spieth - and when he should just suck it up and say nothing at all. Off the course the pair are close friends.
Ian Finnis
Finnis has been with Tommy Fleetwood since the Englishman joined the DP World Tour and later moved to the PGA Tour. He is an imposing figure, to say the very least. He was at Fleetwood’s side for all his bitter disappointments, most notably the Canadian Open, the Travelers Championship and the FedEx St Jude. Finnis was criticised in some quarters for allowing Fleetwood to change clubs at the final hole during his demoralising defeat at the Travelers but Fleetwood would hear none of it. And the joy on his face when he finally landed The Tour Championship at East Lake told you everything you need to know about the very special relationship they share.
Geno Bonnalie
Bonnalie may not have been a household name but that all changed after the first season of the Netflix series Full Swing. He was Joel Dahmen’s caddie and he stole the show with the frustration he showed at his employer. He expressed the view on camera that Dahmen was wasting his talent. The pair had been friends since childhood and Bonnalie’s hard-hitting criticism of his employer had a huge impact on the player and all those who watched it. It reduced both men to tears. And then, in July 2025, Bonnalie decided that he’d had enough and the pair parted company.
