English Golfers Who Could Win The Open 2025

We are now a quarter of the way into the 21st century and in that time not one English golfer has claimed victory at the Open Championship. We’ve had Americans, Australians, Italians, and plenty more, but not a single Englishman. Even more surprisingly, the last Englishman to win the Open was in fact Nick Faldo way back in 1992! Here is our list of English golfers who could secure the fourth and final major trophy of the season at Royal Portrush this weekend.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Feels like it's been quite some time since Matt Fitz last found himself on one of these lists, considering his form of the past year and a bit. Fitz has hobbled around the world rankings this season, but with a recent T4 finish at the Scottish Open, a T8 finish at the Rocket Classic the week before and a T17 finish at the Travelers Championship the week before that, Fitz is really finding his form in good time for the final major weekend of the season. Could the former US Open champion claim his second major title at Portrush?

Tommy Fleetwood

Always plenty to be said about Tommy Fleetwood's golf game, yet so very little to be said about his trophy cabinet, disappointingly. We all thought Fleetwood's victory drought was coming to its long-awaited end at the Travelers Championship recently, the less said the better. However, Tommy is not shy of good form this season, and his first PGA victory is coming. With five top 10 finishes and four top 20 finishes this year, could Tommy go one step further this weekend and walk away with his first PGA Tour victory?

Tyrrell Hatton

We all know how important these majors are for LIV golfers, for Ryder Cup points and world ranking places, and Hatton has shown he knows that as well. With a T4 at this year's US Open and a T14 at Augusta, it is clear Tyrrell can play on the main stage. Hatton also recently registered a T5 finish at LIV Dallas. His impressive iron play and overall game is a perfect match for the links golf challenge at Portrush, so could he be the next Englishman to bring the Claret Jug home?

Justin Rose

Rose's season has been nothing short of spotty, however he is far from ruled out of this year's Open Championship, a recent sixth place finish at the Scottish Open proves that.

Rose will be on his game for Portrush, it also proves he has what it takes to compete with the harsh links conditions. Rose finished in second place at the 2024 Open Championship; will he take the next step at Portrush this time around?

Aaron Rai

Potentially more of a dark horse pick than an outright contender, but Rai should definitely be in the back of your mind ahead of this weekend. Rai’s season has been scarce of consistent form; however, he has still displayed his class and confidence throughout the season. The final major of the year also provides one last chance to prove himself worthy of a spot in the Ryder Cup team for this September. Seemingly far from guaranteed a spot in Team Europe this year, the Open could give him the perfect opportunity to force his way into Luke Donald's team.

Those are our top English picks for this year's Open Championship, be sure to keep a close eye on the names above, as they are sure to be bringing the class to Portrush this weekend!
