The Open Final Qualifying 2025 - What You Need to Know

On Tuesday 1st July, 288 players will compete for a minimum of 20 spots (minimum of five from each venue TBC) in the 2025 Open Championship which takes place at Royal Portrush from Thursday 17th July.

Four venues - all of which are Highly Recommended on Golfshake - Dundonald Links, Burnham & Berrow, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire will each host 72 players over 36 holes with a host of names most of you will recognise, and some you may be unfamiliar with.

Here I take a deep dive, by venue, to reveal some of the names to look out for.

Dundonald Links

Dundonald Links

Former European Ryder Cup teammates Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson are paired together - along with amateur Connor Graham, with their first rounds getting underway at 7:50am. What a fantastic experience for him!

Another notable group tees off at the same time, but from the 10th tee featuring two DP World Tour players in Jack Senior and Marc Warren, who will play alongside YouTuber Peter Finch who documents his journey to this stage in his ‘Quest for The Open’ YouTube series and made it through by winning his regional qualifier on a tough day at Caldy Golf Club.

Other recognisable names at the Scottish venue will include DP World Tour winners Angel Hidalgo, Johannes Veerman and Adrian Meronk

Burnham & Berrow

Two more previous Ryder Cup players will be pegging it up at Burnham & Berrow. Chris Wood, the 2016 Ryder Cupper currently has playing rights on the Challenge Tour, and was also a previous winner of the BMW PGA at Wentworth.

Oliver Wilson, who played in the 2008 event, will also be setting his sights on a spot at Portrush when he tees off at 9:55am.

Brandon Robinson Thompson - who is finding some form on the DP World Tour in recent weeks - is also in this field, as are a host of recognisable names from the former EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour.

On a personal level, I will also be keeping an eye on local amateur Max Weaver who came through regional qualifying at Gog Magog in Cambridge, who is trying to follow in his brother Tyler's footsteps after he made his major debut at the US Open in June following a successful qualifying campaign. What a few weeks for the Weaver family - potentially!

Royal Cinque Ports

What a story to potentially unfold here.

Father and son, Ian and Luke Poulter are both in this field. Ian needs no introduction. Luke will be heading out at 7:15am closely followed by dad Ian at 7:35am - albeit on the 10th tee.

The Weaver dream continues at Royal Cinque Ports, as mentioned earlier, with brother Max trying to get through at Burnham & Berrow, Tyler will be trying for his second major appearance in two - what an achievement that would be for the Suffolk amateur.

A whole host of other big names will be trying for a spot from this venue, including former US Open winner Graeme McDowell and a long list of current and former DP World Tour players that include Jen Dantorp, Matt Southgate, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, Erik Van Rooyen, Tom Lewis, Dean Burminster and Peter Uihlein

It's worth keeping an eye on Sam Smitherman - who is the head pro at Royal Cinque Ports and could benefit from local knowledge.

West Lancashire

More tour winners will come together at West Lancs.

Alex Fitzpatrick, Shubhankar Sharma, Sam Horsfield, Harold Varner III and Lucas Herbert are the standout names to have all won on the DP World Tour at some stage in their careers.

Another name to keep an eye on would be Andy Ogletree, the American who was the 2019 US Amateur champion and went on to make his major debut in The Masters the following year, where he made the cut and was low amateur for the week. He also has a previous Open appearance - finishing 79th last year at Royal Troon.

Whatever happens, it's sure to be a great day following the scoring via The Open website and social media, with the players coming through earning their spots into the final major of 2025 and possibly etching their place in history.
