DP World Tour Pro Makes Two Aces in Same Round

Friday was a day to remember for Englishman Dale Whitnell who made two holes-in-one during his second round at the South African Open Championship.

This historic event dates back to 1903, but it most likely hasn't seen anything like what the 36-year-old achieved when making an ace on the 179-yard second hole before, remarkably, replicating that feat on the 149-yard 12th.

And these weren't the only eagles that the former Scandinavian Mixed champion recorded as he (more conventionally) made a three on the par five third, meaning that he played consecutive holes (with a combined par of eight) in just four shots.

Completing a staggeringly colourful scorecard, Whitnell also made seven birdies, two bogeys, and one double bogey on the 16th. There were also five comparatively routine pars that all added up to a nine-under 63 that saw the former Walker Cup player rebound from a 72 on Thursday to launch himself into contention at Durban Country Club.

Underlining just how rare this achievement is at the highest level, you have to turn the clock back a decade to find that future Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman made two holes-in-one in the same round at the 2015 FedEx St Jude Championship on the PGA Tour.

For Whitnell, it's a slice of history that could yet propel him to something more meaningful, but for now, he'll just have to calculate whether two aces mean double the charge at the bar.
