Europe's Ryder Cup team to face United States in September will be announced a day later than usual to allow US-based Europeans to stake a claim for a place.

The captain usually announces the line-up after the final counting tournament, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, which ends on 26 August.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said: "We are going to wait to see what happens in the States before deciding."

Justin Rose and Paul Casey were omitted in 2010 before finishing a PGA event.

"The scenario last time was delicate for the players in the States," added Olazabal.

I would like to have an eye on the players who are hot at that time - if a guy is on the verge of winning, it means he is on the top of his game. It would be a good idea to have thought about him

"It was not a comfortable situation for anybody.

"We have made a decision regarding that and it [the team announcement] is going to be the Monday following Gleneagles."

The Scottish event finishes at the same time as the final round of the Barclays Tournament in New York will be taking place.

It is the first event in the PGA Tour's play-off series and several candidates for Olazabal's team, including Rose and Casey, are likely to be taking part.

The American tournament will not count towards the qualifying process because the deadline for the world ranking points list will have already expired but players could still pick up a wildcard.

Olazbal said: "I would like to have an eye on the players who are hot at that time. If the guy is on the verge of winning [in the US], it means he is on the top of his game. It would be a good idea to have thought about him."

European Tour chief executive George O'Grady backed the move saying the Gleneagles tournament, won in 2010 by Edoardo Molinari, is less likely to be overshadowed.

"It was a tremendous finish last time with Edoardo winning and it was almost sort of buried in the Ryder Cup news," O'Grady said.

"This way the tournament gets a fair shot and the captain can see the conclusion of the American event that night on television, look at the results and make a considered view."

O'Grady suggested the formal announcement of the 2012 European team will be made at noon on 27 August but this has still to be confirmed.
