I think it's more rude if they don't invite you to play through !

don't you think this is one of the toughest things on course, asking if you can play through when they obviously haven't given it a thought ?

If the group in front of you are holding you up then they should let you play through, just out of common decency.
Once they fall a full hole behind the group in front then they must let you through!
Take every opportunity to ask them about letting you through.
If all else fails phone the pro shop and let them know what is happening.
A decent golf club will send somebody out to deal with them.
Remember, you should call the group behind through while you look for your ball, not look for ten minutes then think about calling them through.

The slower they are the harder it is to get in front. By the time they have left the green they have usually all teed off before your group has played all their approaches and putted out then got to the next tee.

A lot of older guys don't recognise a Single Player, even though the Rules now do.
Also I have seen many times a two ball ask to, and pass a fourball, then two holes later lose a ball but refuse to let the fourball back through "because they are slower".

Lyth I do recognise a single player, but that does not mean that I have to agree with him having standing. Just spoils the pace of play for everyone.
Unfortunatelky singles/2 balls do not mix with 3/4 balls, so why do clubs insist on putting them out from the same tees. This is what causes all the strife, but does not happen in a properly run private club.

Slow play is getting worse and its going to get worse if somethings not done about it. At the weekend it was me and a mate and we were stuck behind 4 women who quite frankly couldnt hit a ball and were looking for balls on almost every hole. There was no one in front of them and they still wouldnt let us through!
Sometimes i play by myself and recently i was told off by a four ball in front for being by myself and they said they werent going to let me through as singletons shouldnt be allowed in there opinion.
