shaft specs for a 3 wood
I am in the market for a 3 wood to be used off the fairway and tee to provide a medium trajectory and maximum distance with roll to be used in windy conditions.
Which graphite shaft would give me these options.
A 3 wood that provides a medium trajectory and gives me +220 yards off the fairway and provides accuracy would be more beneficial to my game attacking the Par 5's and long Par 4's..
Which combination of shaft specs would i be best looking for, Reg flex with firm tip, or stiff flex with soft tip. Which brand of graphite would provide more choice, Mitsubishi Rayon, Grafalloy, Fujikura etc.
I am going to have to try before i buy so has anyone got any preferences as accuracy is a must.
My driver swing is near the 90 mph range, my driver is a 12* Ben Sayers Off-set, this give good consistency but a high ball flight with little roll using Pro v1x balls only provides around 220 - 250 yds compared to another 10 yards from the HX Hot Bite but the 1x suits my game into green. I know i could change to a different driver to look for another 20+ yards but i have not come across one that fits my swing that stays straight and is priced up for a Yorkshireman.
At the moment i have an old Wilson 4 wood (18) and i hit that low and straight but i have to slow my swing down a little because when i go and play my usual swing speed i get a fade. The shaft is steel lightweight, counter torque (shaft twisted about 180 in a 3'' length starting 6'' up from sole of club), flex probably reg. I get around 190 -210yds with roll on a reduced swing speed. This club is just too short off the tee. I need to be able to smack the ball off the tee.
Any ideas anyone apart from getting custom fitted.

Colin , I had the same thoughts as you towards the end off 2011 and opted for a Callaway 13* FT Tour with a Diamana Whiteboard X flex. The results were pretty much spot on , long carry with mid/low trajectory and good roll. Not sure what my S/speed is ,but would imagine around 100 or less. Maybe the same combo in a S flex for you ? I don't think the DW x flex is overly stiff to me anyway. Good luck.

Colin, offset driver and a fade with the 4 wood would suggest to me that you are hitting across the ball. The more left you aim to compensate the worse it gets. This is just an educated guess so if its off the mark, fair enough - next time you have a practice session check your alignment and that your left shoulder (assuming you are right handed) is pointing to the target at address. This might save you buying anything.
I would however recommend Callaway FT 3 wood, ive tried a few an this club really sends the ball miles.

Colin - well done for being able to hit a ball at all. I can empathise over the knee, mine gives me some serious bother!

Colin, a stiffer shaft should provide more accuracy though distance is sacrificed. You really need to try out a few to see which suits you.
