Hidden gems - golf courses

Posted by: user8 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Sun 8th Jan 2012 22:45 | Last Reply

Just had Baildon Golf Club recommened as a hidden gem.  Nicely rated 4.64 from 5 out of 12 reviews on Golfshake and currently 79th overall on Golfshake and to make it even better priced under £20

Anyone recommend any other courses as hidden gems ?  not just on price point but maybe new/unknown or off the beaten track.

The Rolls of Monmoth about 3 to 4 miles outside Monmouth, a great course in a fantastic setting it's certainly in my top ten that i've played. Quite pricey but as a treat well worth it although  they have special deals on wednesdays.

Woodlake Park Nr Usk, superb greens all year round with great veiws over looking a reservoir don't be put off by low green fee's they should be doubled at least, fantastic value.

Ross on Wye GC, a superb track , well established with mature trees very much in apperance to a Surrey type course.

If you managed to bag these three on a small break it would be one hell of a good few days golfing!

For any Golfshakers in the North-West, may I suggest Hart Common in Westhoughton, a few miles from Bolton. Generally under £20, the greens are some of the finest in the country. Lightning quick and still hold up extremely well, even in winter. Getting to the greens is not overly difficult on any of the holes, but given the quality, your putter needs to be hot to card a good score. Requires all different types of shot-making. Best in the Lancashire area I've played.

I would say Eskdale Golf Club in the West of the Lake District.  Near Ravenglass hidden away in the flood plain of the River Esk it is a beautiful setting with some quite challenging holes and some fairly straightforward.  Never known it to busy when I visit in Spring Bank Holiday week.  Very reasonable green fees and extremely friendly welcome!
