my goal is to go to qualifying school one i reach the age of 18. (currently 12) at present i am a member of stand golf club. i was thinking of not  re joining and paying to play in open comps and local junior tours. but with my goal to go to qualifying school at 18 (if all goes to plan of being scratch by then) will i need to be a member of a club and have a congu handicap? will a golfshake handicap card do? please help - this is playing on my mind!

I'd replied earlier today via this post: http://www.golfshake.com/forums/view/9735/golf_shake_handicap_card.html

I would suspect you would get more regular competition golf by being a member of a club plus it's unlikely you would be able to play in Open Competitions as by design these are for club golfers.

Why aren't you renewing with your club ?  surely they have a junior system set-up and through that you would get some coaching and competitions focused towards juniors.  All vitally important at this stage in your golf development.

its not for certain yet, the reason i was thinking of it was because my club has a very poor junior section, yes, we do have comps - yet on two, three maybe of the 10 juniors we have turn up. i, in all fairness, am always one of those playing. also our handicaps are never looked at - for example i shot ten over, 82, yesterday in a comp - my club handicap is 23

Stay where you are Liam, it is a very good course and an 82 is pretty impressive round there for anyone. let alone a 12 year old.

To enter Q-School you need an 'Official Hcp' which can only be obtained through Golf Clubs.

Copy of my answer on the other thread,

To enter Tour School you need one of two things. One is a current 'Official Hcp' (Scratch or better)and the other is to be a member of a Professional Golfers Body (PGA or USPGA etc). Plus the £1350 entry fee of course.

Liam

As a Schoolmaster of twenty years and more experience, and also having played with twelve year old boys who are scratch players may I offer the following?

Enjoy your golf always, but please do not make it your lifetime ambition; you may be sorely disappointed.

Enjoy your golf always, but do not rely on the prospect of making it your living; you may be sorely disappointed!

Enjoy your golf always but stick in at school and get as well qualified as you can; take no notice of those who say qualifications are easier then when they did them; they are not!

Enjoy your golf!!!

Happy Christmas!

Ambition is a positive force in sport, but realism also has a part to play in where you want to take your game. You have youth on your side so take your time, enjoy this wonderful game and set yourself smaller, achievable targets within a shorter timespan. Who knows, where you can end up. Most importantly, enjoy, enjoy this wonderful game. Good luck.

Liam, your last  round was fantastic, What happened from the 12th-14th? You were struggling to break 90 now you have been unlucky not to beak 80. What has happened. As for tour school, Wait until you are playing near to scratch then have a look. Try to have a go at some comps at your own level then as you get better the comp will be at a higher level.

Best of luck Dave CAC handed Geordie
