Hole in one on a Par 4 - how good does it get
10th at Owston has two lakes in front of you, but with about 220yds of carry you can clear them on a shortened 245yd hole on the winter tee. It was a perfect drive looking straight. when the guy's in front of us around the green started jumping up and down. I was greeted with hole in one mate going to be expensive.
when we got back to the club house (hotel) only the 4 ball I was in and the bar tender 9only cost me £14. but worth every penny.

Gary great effort! well done.

In my days par 3's were up to 250 yards, but nevertheless a great result for you, well done. But no way is that a par 4.

It's an odd little hole, not a bad one to ace! - not played Owston for a while, what sort of condition is it in Gary?

It's fairly good. Greens in good touch, winter tee's OK which are basically markers on fairway in front of normal tees.

If anyone can play mid week between 10 and 11am, and put a 4 ball together, they are doing a Balti ball. This is cracking value at £10 per person including a superb curry after you play. Its a cracking deal and the food was great, we all enjoyed today.

congratulations mate, what an acheivement, he's already started about back in my day ect ect ect you will always get somebody trying to put a dampener on it as with my hole in one. but a huge well done from me!!

Cracking Albatross!!
The card says par 4, so par 4 it is. John is right in saying 250yds is when a par 4 starts but that is only a recommendation. The difficulty of the hole can affect what par it is against a particular yardage.

Thanks for all your congratulations. The way I look at it, its a hole in one and whether you say it's luck or should be a par 3. It's very difficult to hit a ball upto 250yds straight enough to give you the chance. I know in the group of golfers I play with there are 1 or 2 with a hole in one I have one on a par 3 and now one on a par 4. This must make me a very lucky golfer and absolutely over the moon.

No Gary you now have two on par threes.

John, don't be so mean and get your facts right. CONGU state the range of par 4s is 220-500 yards. Well played Gary and don't let the old curmudgeon spoil your achievement.
A double malt for me, by the way.

If I ever meet You james, I'll get you that Malt (I presume a single malt would be preferable.
Reply : Fri 25th Nov 2011 18:53
Who are you, James, what are your credentials. No profile does not attract my attention as to what you might say.
If you are correct then CONGU have downgraded what has been known for many years and that is, par3's are holes up to 250 yards long, par fours are holes up to 475 yards long and everything over this length is deemed a par five.
Whilst the hole in one was a fantastic achievement, especially with a driver, the length of the hole played could not, in any respect be called a par 4. Sorry.

Dear all,
didn't want to start a big fuss. The hole is listed as 263yds on tthe card, I estimated that the tee was brought forward about 10-15yds from where the yardage plate was so you were off the proper tee for winter. I do not know whether this plate is to centre of green or front, but the flag was centre.
All I know it said par 4 on the card supplied by the golf club
hope this helps

John
I am of the same vintage as you.
I have been a Club Secretary for the last 11 years (I know I should have retired but haven't).
CONGU directive for setting par:
Par 3 - up to 250 yards
Par 4 - 220 to 500 yards
Par 5 - 440 + yards
These have been in effect for at least the last 10 years.
and from 1st January 2012,
Par 6 - from 661 yards.

So CONGU in its wisdom contradicts itself by stating par 3's up to 250 yards and then stating that par fours can start from 220 yards, this only confirms what everyone already knows, that CONGU is a national disgrace and has no idea how to operate a fair handicapping system.
You are to be admired, James, for holding the p[osition of Secretary at a golf club for the length of time that you have stated. A tough job.

John
Length isn't everything - as the actress said to the Bishop.
The reason for the overlap between categories is the other factors to be taken into acount - Out of Bounds, water hazards, length of carry, doglegs etc. etc.
I hope you weren't offended by my post - it was meant in a lighthearted way and I can also be a curmudgeon in certain circumstances.

James, I don't take offence at anything on this forum, we are, after all just expressing our views.

Thanks Dave,
game went to pot though on back 9 probably from worrying about the bar bill. However the 3 golfers who were stood by the green to congratulate me never came in the bar and there was no one else in. I got away with a cheap bar bill.
