Golf Days Out in January

Hi, one of my mates is 50 at the end of Janary and the boys are planning a suprise golf day for him.  Trouble is, golf in January aint too great, so the plan is to go with a links course somewhere in East Lothian or Fife or an inland one that will hopefully have no mats and preferibly no winter greens (problem being frost of course, or worse, snow).  We are hoping to get a decent price from somewhere, I noticed the Westerwood is doing tee offs for a tenner but I played there a couple of years ago in January and it was Winter Green Central.

Anyone got any ideas?
