Question from a newbie regarding balls

Posted by: user414389 | Sun 25th Sep 2011 21:15 | Last Reply

Hi

I played my 2nd 18 hole round on Friday at the very brilliant Sherdley Park course.

When I was putting my ball down on the 5th I noticed a patch of it had been roughed up. My partner has been playing for years so I asked him if this would hamper the ball in flight, thinking that if one side is rougher than the other it would travel faster on one side, just as a polished cricket ball does.

He tells me it wouldn't make any difference, is he right?

Incidently I used that ball on the tee and it swerved like a David Beckham free kick right in to the bushes never to be seen again. I'm blaming my partner!

Thanks in advance

I'd say that any difference in the texture of your golf ball will affect it in flight.

I'm not qualified to give any factual data, but I'm certain that it would affect your ball.

The patch of golf ball that is roughed up will grab hold of the air and put more spin on the ball.

I don't think that your next tee shot was all to do with this, probably more to do with you having an open clubface at impact!

This is just my opinion and I'm certain that people on here who know better will soon tell me if I'm correct or not.

If it was my I would put that ball in my practice ball bag.
