Short chip and run

Posted by: user16106 | Tue 6th Sep 2011 12:29 | Last Reply

Advice req. Im 3 yds from the green on a dead pan lie, 2 yds of 6" rough between me and the green.( so I cant putt it ). I invariably either thin it or catch the ground before the ball. I would normally use a 52 deg wedge. Is there any tips to play this shot?

Cheers Dave CAC handed Geordie.

Hi Dave, it would of course depend on how much green you have to work with, but to prevent both the thinning and the fat shot, I use my sand wedge, making sure that the blow is downward, to get the leading edge behind the ball and using the bounce to stop hitting the shot fat.

All short shots have to be made confidently or all what you have described will end up as the likely result.

I play most of them with the ball towards the back foot and with an 8 or 9 iron. Everything is bump and run for me. Less chance of fatting it that way, and a thin isn't the end of the world if I play it like that as my intention is for a low runner anyway.

The wedge/gap/sand wedge only come out if I have to play over, or out of, a bunker.

Putt with a 5 wood or rescue choked down on the shaft.  The shape of the head is designed to get through the rough and give a clean strike.  Takes a little practice to get the distance right but very effective

Dave is asking for specific advice on how to play the specific shot he has described. A bump and run would be very risky, Chris's idea of a rescue club would be just the same. he is on a dead pan lie (tight) with six inches deep rough between him and the green for 2 yards. He has not stated where on the green the pin is, but in any case the ball will have to be lofted over the deep rough.

I play a 58 degree wedge with the ball level with the inside of my right foot keeping my hands ahead of the club head I try to make a shallow swing not a steep one. this will fly the ball approx 75 percent with 25 percent run.

I have found playing from the edge of the green i can only now use my sand wedge, if i try to chip and run i end up out the back, i have more control flopping it up and seem to have mastered this now.

As far as a pin, let just say about 10 yds on the green. I think john may have an answer. I dont play the shot with any confidence just in case I thin it and fly through the back so a bit of commitment to the shot may work. Thanks for all the advise.

Practice, practice & more practice.

Practice with the club you feel will give you the desired results & then commit to it. I find by keeping my head still until I have hit the ball produces a much better strike than trying to look up as you hit it.

Once your confident try the same shot with a different club so you can gauge how much air time & how much roll time each club will produce

See what the england amateur short game coach has to say: http://www.garysmithgolf.com/a/short-game-focus. I've Been using this for a while now (and admittedly biased as I did his iPhone app), but it really works. Completely different approach but the result is you can hit it a bit thin or a bit fat and it still works out fine.
