Adjusting handicaps

Posted by: user411263 | Tue 9th Aug 2011 16:25 | Last Reply

Hello, we have started an unofficial society with work colleagues and are sorting out the handicaps. Unfortunately the 28 cap gets in the way of us evening out the players at the moment (who knows maybe we'll get better....) so we cant use any of the standard tools to calculate and adjust the handicap....

I had done bit of research on how to calculate the initial handicap...ie calculate their adjusted score as score (capped at +2 each hole) less the SSS....averaged over 3 rounds.

The problem then came when attempting to adjust these with so many >28 handicappers.

for example, we have a guy playing off 31. He played last week and his adjusted score was 29. lot of holes getting capped at +2 but a few more bogeys than normal. In this case it seems that his handicap should be reduced by 1 stroke (2x0.5).

However, he only scored 30 points off the 31 hanidcap which would imply that his handicap should increase by 0.1???

Any idea what should happen in this case???

Thanks

J

James,

It is Nett +2 or Zero points in a Stableford, so should be not be far apart at the end of the day

Example for SSS70 / Par 70 = 36pts for par but SSS69 / Par 72 = 39pts for par. Also SSS72 / Par 70 = 34pts for par.

The two shot 'buffer zone' also should be included.

Without seeing the card and knowing the SSS etc, I can't give a clearer answer.

James, as you know the maximum handicap for a male, adult golfer is 28.

If the majority of your group are not even at the 28 handicap stage then this can cause problems.

What you might have to do is all people to have a higher handicap, say upto 35.

Introduce a 'Category 5 golfer', this means anybody between 28.5 and 35.0

When they have a good round you would reduce their handicap by 0.5 a shot until they reach the category 4 stage.

Hope this helps.

Russ
