What you need to shoot depends on which course you are playing.
Look on the scorecard and ignore the par, find out what the SSS (Standard Scratch Score) is. This is the magic number that they work you handicap out from.
Lets take an example.
If the SSS for the course is a 70 then you would have to shoot a 96 to have a handicap of 26.
Remember that the worse you can score on any hole is a double bogey, this includes any shots that you have on that hole.
So if you are playing with a 28 handicap, and you are playing a par 4 hole with a SI (Stroke Index) of 3. If you score a nine on that hole the handicap chap will only put it down as an eight.
The hole is a par 4, you get 2 shots because of your handicap. You are then allowed two shots over that, this gives a total of eight.
Hope I have explained this so that you can understand it.

David, I remember when I first started playing golf.
Lot's of thins and fat shots. Then I managed to get to a stage where I didn't do them that much and my scores came down.
Used to play a lot of golf at Crookhill Park GC, which is between Doncaster and Rotherham.
Got to a stage where I was shooting 100 to 105 on a regular basis, but just couldn't get below 100!
Must have taken me about six weeks before I manage to shoot below 100. The next couple of rounds were back over 100. Then I was getting below 100 every time, with the odd exception of course!
Once you break 100 your next goal will be to break 90, then 80 and so on. I'm very lucky as I have shot a 69 (on a par 70 course), only did it the once but what a day.
That is one of the things with this game, I've got down to a 13 handicap but last Sunday playing in the medal I suddenly got the shanks! Shot 102, first time this year I've been over 100 (except for the first round in Portugal, put that down to being up all night and then trying too hard!).
Problem sorted after having a lesson so I'm looking to get back to shooting mid 80's around my course.
