Report of First Matchplay League Match

Posted by: user12635 | Tue 26th Jul 2011 12:01 | Last Reply

On Friday 15th myself and Dave Ley set off in great weather to paly our 1st Matchplay League game against Mark Ruth and Gary Richards which would prove to be quite tough as we had to concede 7 and 8 shots to them in their territorry. The venue was the very well established (c.1863) Forest Course at Bramshaw GC in the New Forest. The course lacked the mincured finish of modern courses and utilised the natural contours of the land to the full with some great holes, the 5 par-3s were strong with 3 being over 190 yards.

The ground was rock-hard resulting in balls running on for ever not unlike a links course, so myself and Dave were hitting a lot of long irons off the tee. The outcome of the match was a memorable half which was nip-and-tuck all the way round with no more than 2 holes in it at any stage, and Gary played out of his skin (for  21-handicapper!!). Highlights of the front-nine for me were Dave's back-to-bakc birdies on Holes 3 & 4, Gary's unexpected birdie o the par-5 7th (within 4 ft in 3!), and my walk-over on the Stroke Index 2 6th whilst the others were tree-spotting in the forest...

The highlights of the back-nine were Mark playing too close for comfort to a fearsome bull (still played his ball though...) on the par-4 14th and then reminded Gary that he would have to hole his 5th shat from the trees for the half - which amazingly Gary did!!!, and the 200 yrd Par-3 17th where Dave hit the green and I was just through - with 6-irons!!

Though we did not win, myself and Dave thought we had found another couple of amicable golfshakers and joined Mark and Gary for a pint or two at Gary's local pub and would love to play again perhaps back in Wales or one of the other courses in the New Forest.

Another success for Golfshake.com
