Pre-planning your round
Is it possible to sit down before a round of golf and work out what shots you want to play on each hole?
I'm a high handicapper and dont really know where my ball is going to end up at the best of times however I am thinking about sitting down and working out where i'd realistically like to be after two shots on each par 4. I'm hopping this will stop me trying to hit the green with my second shot which usually ends up in me sacrificing accuracy for distance.
So what i really mean is should i plan to be 40-50yds short of the green after two shots rather than just going fot it and usually being in line with the pin but having to play my 3rd shot from the rough/bunker.
Any thoughts on this???

"so want to make sure my approach shots land with 2 or 3 feet of the hole"
I'd love to make sure my approach shots land within 2 or 3 feet of the hole. I'm lucky if they land within 2 or 3 yards of the green!

Bogey golf plan all the way for me. if it works then great, if not then there is always next week.
Tomorrow 1st tee will be 21 utility then 8 iron, chip on and 2 putt..
2nd tee will be driver 5 iron chip on and 2 putt..
3rd tee will be driver 7 wood chip on then 2 putt..
Hopefully....
But it could be:
1st tee....6
2nd tee...6
3rd tee....6..............

Pressure, like Stress, is self induced.

Playing shots to the greens is what the game is all about. The only thing I take on board is where the bale out area is, the location of greenside bunkers and where the serious trouble is. Once these factors have been assessed I then attempt to play the shot accordingly.
I always strive for a par as I reckon the strokes will take care of themselves.
No one should be allowed to receive two shots on a hole, the rules are going backwards.

A handicap system is supposed to get all participants across the line together. The system used in golf, does not do this and you will know what I am talking about.
Why on earth they increased the mens handicap limit to 28, I shall never understand.
I often wonder, if there were no handicaps at all, whether it would help to improve the standards of all players.
I am quite sure that if I had not improved rapidly then I would have packed the game up very quickly, as I see no fun in hacking ones way round a golf course.
I am only playing now because I still feel that I can improve on the rubbish I am currently playing.
Beginners always get my help and attention and I have no qualms in playing with them, but to see the crooks masquerading off a false handicap just to win makes me cringe. Where is the satisfaction in that.

I am afraid that you are talking nonsense, Paul. According to what I have reads on this forum we have very high handicappers who hit the ball three hundred yards, yet you expect me to give them two shots a hole. Get real.

very high handicappers who hit the ball three hundred yards,
Hope you mean eventually John....
I think even most low handicappers would be chuffed at a 300 yard hit...

Cris W - If your friend doea hit it 350 yds then tell him to get onto the Long Driving Circuit, as his talent is being wasted.
Regarding the old man, being one myself, I know where he is coming from, because in our day the maximum handicap was 24 and when three quarters was given it only meant a maximum of a shot a hole.
In their wisdom, the powers to be have raised the handicaps to 28 for men and 36 for women, given full handicap and IMO, destroyed the integrity of the game.

I know the hole well, David having played there in the days of John Sharkey(Pro) and I wouldn't mind betting that you can sit there all day and count on one hand the number who get on the green in one. This means the higher handicap has the advantage. We had five par threes like that one at Wimbledon Common. John
