Land Drains

One of my biggest bugbears at my golf club is the land drains that are on each hole.

Stapleford Abbotts GC is the only golf course I have played where they have land drains running across/along the fairways, but they haven't covered them!

Above is one of the land drains that runs across the fairway on the 16th hole (Abbotts course). These land drains run down the fairway into the ones running across the fairway (first picture).

What I don't understand is that the land drains are where a ditch used to run across the fairway.  Why didn't they just leave the ditch in place?

As you can see it is quite deep and totally uncovered.  If your drive lands in this it could bounce anywhere.

Have you seen anything like this?

Above is a view from the location where the last picture was taken looking up the 16th fairway towards the green.

The land drains on this part of the fairway run up the fairway.
