Matchplay tips

Posted by: user9368 | Tue 12th Jun 2007 22:17 | Last Reply

I have a matchplay comp this coming Saturday. Till now i dont seem to score well on these events, attendees of the North Vs South comp will back me up on this

What could i be doing wrong? is there some tactics other than the obvious play your best. We will be playing full handicap so i have an extra 5 shots over my competitor.

another good tip is always make sure you never leave your putts short of the hole, this way you stand more chance of holing out.

Also try to find out what you opponents weakness's are.

If they mention they are sturggling to drive make sure you hit your 1st tee shot down the middle (use whatever club necessary), this will put the pressure on them straight away.

If they mention putting don't concede any putts, if they mention chipping make sure you hit the middle of the green forcing them to 'chip' well.

Not conceding any Putts at all might not always work. Perhaps try this...

Make them Putt the first 1 or 2 holes when they are in say 1 - 2 foot of the hole. If they are succesful concede them for the most of the rest of the round until they have to make a putt or two to halve or win a hole near the end.

Then make 'em Putt out. Having not putted from this distance, might play on their mind (any mention of how important the putt is might help too)and there is a chance they'll miss...perhaps...it does depend how good they are obviously.

I would not of course employ any of these tactics myself J

Of course you wouldn't, John, too much of a gentleman.

"always make sure you never leave your putts short of the hole"

Played 4 rounds this last three days and kept leaving it short - kept repeating "don't leave it short" but only by the end of the 4th round did I actually manage to hit it the right length.

Not being the longest of the tee wont be a problem think ill probably try strategic coughing for everything else and i might be in with a chance. Col
