Should we let the South win this year or they may lose interest!

as an idiot, can someone explain the N v S event? I guess as much as it is North vs South in Match Play form (á la Ryder Cup), but how can you qualify to play, is there a limit, are you specially selected....etc etc

Not an idiot at all Matthew. It started as a bit of a joke a few years ago when a few of us had a match play competition, loosely divided into people from either North or South of Northampton. No real qualifications are needed for either team, it's left up to the individual to decide where their loyalties lay. I'm originally from Essex but now live near Derby and have been to every event representing the North and even had the honour of captaining the side (and have dubious honour of being the ONLY loosing North captain).
As for the event, it's something else. The atmosphere is electric and can get quite intense, but most of all it's a real laugh. Must have been 60+ staying overnight at the Abbey last time, and teeing off in front of 100 golfers and partners can be a bit of a bum clencher.
Get your name down when it comes up and commit to it, bet you won't find many people on here who didn't enjoy taking part.

thanks for the clarification Tim. How does the match play work with the different handicaps etc?
As an East Anglian, I feel compelled to label myself a southerner!

Ah, a carrot cruncher, eh? From Colchester myself.
Handicaps are pretty easy to work out and I'm sure there are threads on here about that very subject. But in a nutshell if you've got a group of two pairs viz
North player 1. Hcp 10 North player 2. Hcp 18
South player 1. Hcp 7 South player 2. Hcp 20
So SP1 gets no shots on any holes, NP1 gets 3 shots (on holes SI 1, 2 & 3), NP2 gets 11 shots and SP2 gets 13.

Tim,
did we not do 3/4's handicap last year?
Reply : Fri 3rd Dec 2010 19:40
so the shots gained are based on the lowest handicap of the group?

Once this event has been finalised it will be announced on the forum.
Then it's simply a matter of putting your name down to play, and for which team.

Is there an idea of when and where it will be played. I,m from Newcastle but been in the south east for 22yrs, so a hard choice on which team id go for.
Is there a limit on entries also?
Cheers Dave CAC handed Geordie.

I'm pretty certain it was held in April of this year but I cannot find any details of it on here!
I live in Romford, but come from Yorkshire so I always put my name down for the North team.

This year it was the weekend of the Masters. Those who stayed at the Abbey watched the final round of the Masters on Sunday night in the hotel bar before the event itself on Monday. Some sore heads on the first tee though.

I'm currently discussing this with courses plus also weighing up a slight date change due to the weather we had in 2010. Poss my slip to May but hope to confirm this week.

Don't care when it is or where it is, I'll be there

Is there a minimum age limit on this comp? Only reason I'm asking is because one or two juniors at my club are thinking of attending this event. 15 year olds.
