pre shot routine

Posted by: user16742 | Thu 10th May 2007 19:15 | Last Reply

Heard and read loads of things about pre shot routines,

Whats the best way of getting one?

I know it will be diff
erent for each golfer, but what do you generally do?

Do you think&
nbsp;about it as your walking to the ball or what.

My pre-shot routine is stand behind the ball (about 6 feet) and focus on the intended target, ground the club head and set my grip. Set the club head behind the ball and set stance. Take one 1/2 way back swing (slowish - seems to help set my triangle). Have another look at intended target ( every shot must have an intended target not just a hit) then bang...

What ever you come up with Matt make sure you are comfortable with it and use it on every shot, even down the ranges.

Give mine a go, then tweak it to suite yourself, maybe two 1/2 back swings or whatever takes your fancy.

Let us know what you come up with....

I don't think it matters what your pre-shot routine is particularly.  The key is to do the same thing everytime.  Personally, I stand behind the ball and line it up with the target, grip the club with my left hand only by my left foot and then full grip, address the ball but stood off by the length of my feet, do the swing I want but slowly, checking my hand position, step up by a shoe size, take one look a the target, rotate my right foot square to the ball until it feels right and swing.  I do this routine for all my clubs bar the driver and putter.

 Works for me (most times)

I have the same post shot routine. It usually involves some colourful language, followed by kicking something.

I like to stand behind the ball pick my line and a spot a yard infront of it. Take my grip and take maybe one or two swings. I then walk to the ball place my club on the target and postion my feet/hip/shoulders and smack it.

Everyone to their own through there is no wrong way in my opinion

Agreed I dont think I have ever seen two people with the same routine.

I grip the club with my left hand and walk behind the ball and pick my target line.  Choose my intermidiate target and line my club face to that target.  I line my body around the club and set my grip.  I keep as loose as possible and never stand stil, practice swing (put never on the tee - dont know why??) and hit.

Thats about it, I think.

Definately no wrong way...

I think it is just a case of what the individual is comfortable with.

I think the important point with a pre shot routine is consistency.

Wow, this is an old one!

My preshot routine is: -

  • Check around ball for lie
  • Walk back from ball in line with target about five paces with club in right hand
  • Pick out a marker in the distance and one about five yards in front of the ball for alignment
  • Spin club in hand.  This is my trigger and comes from my squash playing days
  • Walk to ball and place clubhead behind ball with left hand checking alignment
  • Take stance
  • Take grip
  • Take a final look at the target in the distance
  • Relax right arm and swing

Interesting that the only time I take a practice swing is when it's not a full swing so I can get the 'feel' of the shot.

Pick my line as I'm walking to my ball, select appropriate club, 1 practice swing and then spank it.  Simples.

I don't have a re-shot routine, never have. I do everything automatically, sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong.

My bones don't like working as it is, so I cannot afford to have rigor mortis taking over during a pre shot routine.

Nice one John. Still a good few rounds in you yet though I hope.

I hope so too, Chris. I am not really a methodical player, as I tend to experiment with different shots on the way round.

I am just a lucky player, Wayne, you must have noticed that.

My pre shot routine has one aim, to prepare myself for the shot: it depends on what the shot is and what recent bad habits I've slipped into me which I know I have to avoid to effect a good shot.

Not so much of the old coot, if you don't mind. Just concentrate on getting your game in sound enough shape to get even with those two upstarts.

I have no doubt, David, that at South Winchester your class will shine through and the occasion will get to them.

Yes, but only if

""Oh My God..!!!""

Concludes the finish.....

My Pre-Shot routine.....

Find ball, could take a while so you'll all have to wait!

Mouth full of beer

Pick a club, not too hard as I only have three irons.

Practice swing, taking out most of the vegetation around my ball.

Throw cigarette onto floor, was that smoke?

Another mouth full of beer.

Hit ball as hard as I can.

Pick up cigarette and put put out the flames!

Move ten yards down the hole and repeat.

Now how many times have you played behind me?

Russ
