Chippers. Yes or no?

Posted by: user276830 | Thu 15th Apr 2010 23:34 | Last Reply

My three usual playing partners each use a putter-style chipper.

One guy actually uses it from anything within 100 yards, whacking it along the ground up to the green.

I've always avoided buying one, prefering instead to learn how to use my SW, PW and small irons for chipping.

I've heard they're banned on the pro tours, I take it they're ok in the amature game?

What's your opinions on them?

My chipping has been terrible lately and I'm now seriously considering making the switch, especially since I've only the 13 clubs in the bag at the mo.

Using a chipper limits the options available as opposed to those of us who use many different clubs for chipping. I can see some merit in using one but not for me I'm afraid.

I some times carry one on a tree lined course which I use to smack the ball back on the fairway - saves risking damaging a club on a tree root.

Other than that I generally don't use one...

But if it works for you then go for it - who can say its wrong if it saves you shots...

My father and a regular playing partner use a chipper, and to good effect.

I've never had one so I'm getting used to chipping with different clubs.

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't!

I can't really see why I would ever want to use one, but I've seen them used to great effect (was that Dave you were referring to Russ?).  Horses for courses really and much the same argument can apply to carrying a 3 iron as opposed to a hybrid.  If it works for you then use it but I've found that I can get a greater range of chip and runs with my 7 - PW.

I do not normally feel comfortable having a chipper in my bag because I tend to feel it is a waste of a club - but I have swopped and changed depending on whether my standard chipping game lacks confidence at the time !

It has it's place (and I have never heard anything about it being 'illegal' )

OK I'm sitting on the fence regarding this one !

no - use an 8Iron

Leave the chipper out and take a gap wedge instead.

An 8 iron is just as easy to use, like a putter.  But I suppose its what's on the card that counts!

I've started using my 5 wood for long chip shots, very effective.

Chippers should be banned just like those broom handle putters!!!

Only joking wayne, chap we played with on monday (NVS) nailed a few long putts with a broom handle to stay in the game.  I just don't see the point of a chipper which is essentially an 8 iron cut in half!
