Still experimental but there is now a virtual golf leaderboard showing averages per month.
The results can be filtered by year, month and handicap range. Suggestions or thoughts welcome.
This link provides access to the full leaderboard :

Looks good.
Can you do it by the year in total. Anyway of highlighting the stat you're looking at?
Reply : Wed 11th Apr 2007 08:34
Sorted the highlighting, I've added another filter option so you can see the order.
Will sort the year total later this week.
Regards,
Darren.

The new leaderboard is a brilliant! I love the way that you can change the handicap ranges.
Brilliant motivator! May even start recording my GIR, FIR now.
I understand GIR is 2 shots below par of the hole but can anybody explain FIR?
Brilliant work mate, keep it up!!

Crikey Paul that's stats crazy !
2 things that will get extended are yearly average and some sort of virtual competition.
I think what you are talking about is the virtual competion where everyone submits 1 round for a given week and results are worked out accoringly like the tours. Just need to work out our we level out the score cards for different courses, shame we don't have slope ratings in this country
Anyone now of a good leveling system using SSS and Par ?
Does any of this make sense ?

So obvious really, doh! This is definetly a stat I will be tracking now - my score card will look ridiculous now, marks all over it!

Darren,
This is excellent!!!
The best way I can think of of comparing the results (Stableford points) from different courses is to use:
Adjusted points = Stableford points - PAR + SSS
For example if you had 36 points on a course with PAR=72 but SSS=68 (an easier course) your adjusted Stableford points would be 32. This is exactly how the handicap system works as you would need 42 points on this course to play at your handicap.

Slight arithmetic error, Janusz, in your example you would need 40 points to play to your handicap: 36+(72-68). Similarly, if you want to compare the SSS of different courses in Stableford points terms (SSSS):
SSSS = 36+(PAR-SSS), i.e. in the same example 36+(72-68)=40=SSSS.
My society, playing on many different courses, uses this method to adjust handicaps. We also use a simplified method of adjusting handicaps, which might be of interest:
Handicaps up to 20 (Division A) are cut by one third of the number of points better than the SSSS, to the nearest whole number. Handicaps over 20 (Division B) are cut by one half of the number of points better than the SSSS, halves are ignored. Upward revision at year-end based on the whole season's scores - any score within one of your handicap and no increase!
We also have a method of relating the scores on each course to work out our season's prizes. We decided it's unfair to just take Stableford points as we all know some courses are much easier to score on than others (and conditions obviously vary). We therefore take the median score, i.e. the score posted by the player exactly in the middle of the field, as being a true test of the difficulty of that course on that day. So, if I score 34 and the 14th player in a field of 27 (13 above and 13 below) scores 28 I get +6 for that event. Typically, at year-end, an average score of between +5 and +7 takes the title.

Terry,
Yes, you are right. It should have been 40.

Any chance of a driving distance stat?

Watch this space Danny. I can't roll out everything in one go.

How come some people have got amazing FIR stats yet their handicap is over 20 ? With stats like those they should be playing the PGA tour. If i miss the fairway by a gnats left testicle its a fairway missed. Over 85 % ? Are they using the putter off the tee ? Lol

or 50+ points with no reduction in handicap
Reply : Wed 11th Apr 2007 22:10
Nothing I can do about people putting in duff records, I have filtered some out. Believe it or not there were records of less 1 putt per hole ! like to see that happen.
Again the 50+ points is because if you don't set a handicap when you register the stroke allowance for a round defaults to 28 for men and 36 for ladies. Obviously if you are really a 12 handicapper the 28 stroke allowance will seriously affect the stableford points.
I am working on individual comparison stats so you can see how your stats compare to simialr handicappers or even a shot below, which gives you something to work on. Problem is finding the true average and filtering out potential duff records. Almost there though, so watch this space

how about a minimum of 10 rounds to get on the leaderboard. would that help?
Reply : Thu 12th Apr 2007 22:22
Danny that's a good idea. Until you enter x rounds you don't appear this should help to filter out even more cack.
I'm also finishing some comparison reports basically comparing your stats to similar handicappers on the system. This should also help to filter out cack by introducing a x round minimum system before data is treated as worthy.
Cheers.

Just read Forum thread with interest and relief that there are other golfing nutters out there like me who think the VLB is great but also can see its being abused....abused is probably a bit strong!! I honestly think its a case of players not knowing the terminology rather than lying with the facts - Liked Alan's "missed by a gnats left testicle" comment I had the same on a GIR - but if its not on - its not on and that's it!!!
Good luck Darren with the ideas not sure how you get to sleep at night with GIRs, FIRs, SSS's, avg putts, %this, %that, swirling around in your head!!!

I support Adrian's suggestions that people should joint the virtual leaderboard - you could probably add this to the profiles. There are too many 100% FIR's and GIR's and 1 put per hole at the moment.
I assume that some people simply do not care about FIR's, GIR's etc.
