Apologies if this has posted twice.

Can anyone recommend what type of golf ball I should be going for.

I was given some pro v1's  as a present and been using them for a while but I also had some Slazenger ice that I found in the garage - I hit the Slazenger ice much further, lots more roll but then when I get to the green it feels awful, like chipping with a stone.

Can anyone recommend some ball choices sort of inbetween were I can get a bit more roll and distance off the tee but also with a better feel than the slazenger ice balls i tried once I get around the green.

thank you

John

I'm using Wilson Staff Dx2 Soft at the moment.  Changed to them from Pro V1x.  Go long and straight but really soft off the club face so good feel around the green.  £16 a dozen from American Golf.

Srixon AD333 for me.  Used to use the NXT but changed to the Srixon 18 months ago.  No looking back now.

Good distance off the tee and whilst not the softest ball around the green I think it offers enough feel for a 20 something handicapper.

Golf balls are a very individual thing, what is right for one person someone else will hate.  Also depending on your swing characteristics and what you want out of a ball there will be different options.  I use a Pro V1x, used to use a Precept Laddie which I loved (and plenty of golfers would say they hated!) but they stopped making them.

To get a bit of an idea have a look at some of the online ball fitting apps.  An example of one is here:

I imagine allot of manufacturers will have something similar.

It matters if someone is thinking of buying a box to give them a try Wayne!

Some people would love to have the disposable income to buy the right ball at any cost and throw it away after a single round Wayne.  Unfortunately, not everyone has the money to buy expensive balls, especially when a couple of them are disappearing into the undergrowth or water hazard every game.  The result is a need to compromise and that's why price and durability become important factors.  You can sometimes buy a ball that is almost perfect or is 'close enough' for a lot less and then you don't feel nervous about facing the wife when you've lost a couple.

My advice is get some cheap distance balls such as dunlop loco. My reason is unless you are a very low handicapper you wont be using spin, so whats the point of spin balls when all they do is increase your slice or hook.? whereas distance balls fly straighter as they don't spin sideways as much..

John, Not really an answer to your quandrie but im off 15 and love using donnay pro yellow ( honest ). They go long, straight as a die but on the green a touch hard. I also like pinnical exception. Again long, not quite as straight but not quite as hadd on the greens. If the course dosent need long drives then pro v1 or callaway HX black are my choice. Both good distance and very good off around the green. Its a personal choice although trial and error will let you find your choice of ball. I would suggest dont mix and match your balls. Keep with one ball until you decide dont like it or love it.

There are some people that just won't spend any money on a quality ball just as much as they wouldn't consider paying £80 for a round on a top class course, cos they can play locally for £12:50

A quality ball will not enhace my game one little bit and I certainly would not pay £80 for a round of golf on any course.
