Yardage and Feet question, can you help?

Hey Guys,
Anyone know why most of the hole you play, yardage is used, until you get near the green or on it, then people use feet???
Any ideas?

I missed about 6 or 7 crucial ones yesterday, by about 1/36th of a yard.

Ooooh! wonder who that could refer to? I always give them if they're within 0.004166667 of a furlong.
